Lux - "Don't make me laugh..."
Incredible episode, beautiful animation, and meta commentary. Overall, there was much positive about this episode, though there were a few issues I had with it, which I will get into.
Spoiler alert, obviously.
I loved Mr Ring-A-Ding, incredible characterisation as we've seen with the pantheon of gods generally, Maestro (the icon themself Jinx Monsoon), the Toymaker, so it makes sense Lux would choose to represent itself like this hog man. I also loved the ha ha ha ha ha ha, wildly unexpected, and pretty funny. He also came across as intimidating whilst just being this 2 foot little guy, which is also incredible.
Reginald Pye, just brilliant, maybe it's cause the new season of Black Mirror just dropped, it felt very Be Right Back from S3 of the show, mixed with Eulogy and Hotel Reverie this season. (I am so making a Black Mirror post after this one guys) The yearning for his wife was just so sincere that it really hit, more than other things recently, I wish that same energy or back story could be fleshed out for the Doctor or for Belinda.
Speaking of the devils, they did a great job, Belinda, realising that she is a brown woman in 50s America, did more for me than Rosa ever could, and I was one of the few that enjoyed that episode. I do think the Doctor was a bit dismissive of her worries tho, and he was generally kind of ignoring that she just wants to get home. My worries have been actualised, it does seem Belinda was much more on board with the Doctor Who shenanigans than I thought she ought to be, however, I think they worked around that decently well. I hope it is discussed more in upcoming episodes, as it makes Belinda's character much more multi-dimensional, funnily enough.
So as mentioned, there are some issues with the episode. As discussed the Doctor's ignorance of what Belinda wants being one of them. Another being the Doctor's crying.
I know this isn't a how take or anything. It's just the frame changing scene was phenomenal, the meta jokes with the whovians, incredible, Belinda crying at killing her first "people" pretty good, the Doctor crying again... Guys, I can't do this anymore. First episode I was like, maybe because we didnt see Sasha 55 it was needed, here, rolled my eyes, then when the trailer for the next episode shows the tear rolling down Ncuti's cheek. Piss off. I think the Doctor showing his emotions is important and an interesting place, needed place, to take the character, every single episode though? Really, Russel, it was necessary EVERY episode? I'm not saying that him expressing his sadness is something not a discussion important to see often, but does that expression need to take the form of tears? I really don't think it does.
I do love the scene's they are imortalised in film in by the way, all of them are beautiful and well done.
I loved this episode, genuinely thought it was banging, I feel like it's gonna be up there when we look back in the future, kind of like how Boom, Rogue and 73 Yards feel from last season.
Better than The Robot Revolution for sure, I don't think that take is gonna be disagreeable.
Doctor Who 2x01 - The Robot Revolution
Bringing this back because NEW DOCTOR WHO!!! NEW DOCTOR WHO!!!
i’m so done omfg. i unfortunately saw ncuti gatwa trending before i watched it and had to convince myself it wasn’t because he regenerated. literally wtf. would it be wrong to say that last like 10-15 minutes almost ruined the whole season (and it’s SUCH a good season too.) not to immediately pivot to ruby but i’m annoyed she didn’t get to say bye to his face after the horrors she’s been through (conrad) and also i really wanted to see if ruby STILL remembered everything. idk i feel like this is on purpose to open up a rehash of reality war where the doctor is like “oh we’re still in a parallel reality !!” #ew. i’m maybe being too critical because i’m upset but like what about rogue???? not even a nod to the fact that it happened?? so yeah i’m gonna go cry
the doctor who brain worms have taken over. polish polish or whatever
