In The Unexpected: Narrative Temporality and the Philosophy of Surprise, Mark Currie writes, “[T]he relationship between an open future, which is still to come, and a closed one, which has already happened, is the defining feature for the relationship between a reader and what has traditionally been called a protagonist or any other participant in the action of a written narrative.” We identify with the character whose temporal experience most closely mirrors ours. The premise of Doctor Who conflates this unimaginably vast gap between story time and narrative time with the characters of the Doctor and the companion. The Doctor is a time-travelling being that has lived for billions of years and the companion is one deep and striking glimpse into aspects of that life. It builds on the premise of the Doctor and us. The story of the Doctor is unending and heartwarming but there are episodes we watch foregrounding the Doctor’s grief whose story time spans much longer than we’ve lived. Much longer than the lives of star systems. Here, nostalgia is a compass spinning haywire. This is an essay about the failure of the mechanics of nostalgia in Doctor Who as incurred during a period known among persistent viewers as RTD2.
