“Sure.” Danny volunteered with a friend grin, plopping down into the chair across from Hogarth’s desk, absently tucking his tie against his chest. “I’m surprised you didn’t get it yet.  I’ll send another one.  They’re great.  It’s like a bouquet except it’s made out of fruit and you can eat it and some of them are covered in chocolate.  I’ll send you one with lots of chocolate.  After all, I owe you.”  Though, that was probably covered by the retainer they’d negotiated, but still-- as far as Danny was concerned there are more to thank Hogarth for than simply helping him get his life back.  Or part of it, rather.

The other part was more tricky.

It’s a ten year old’s scrawled hand writing, but at least it’s in pen instead of crayon like it was a couple years ago.  The spelling hasn’t much improved, but it’s getting there.

Miss Hogarth J-Money,

Thank you for the M&Ms. I’m sorry me and Joy stole so many of them but only left you the brown ones.  When we get back from China I’ll bring you more j-money dolars dollars to buy more and alott of cokes from the machine. 

I left you this note in your file capinet cabinet because I think things aren’t good with Mr. Meachum.  He and my dad are fighting about something but I don’t know what it is.  But it’s not your fault.  My dad says he really likes you and he hopes you’ll be with the companee company for a long time.  maybe even when i’m the boss.  That’d be great!  

So don’t be mad at yourself for Harold being mad or cranky or whatever.  That’s just the way he is my mom says.  You’re great!  and Joy thinks so too.  Don’t believe what stupid old Harold says anyway.  Or Ward even because  he’s an asshole. But my mom says it takes all kinds so you have to be nice even to assholes.  and don’t call them assholes or you get in trouble.

Anyway g2g because we’re leaving for China to see a new factorie  factoree factory.  I drew a map of china on this note so you know where we are.  When I get back we’ll have more M&Ms.

Athena’s phone was off and she’d been ignoring the knocks, hoping that whoever it was would take the hint. In retrospect, she should have known it was Jeri. She also should have called her hours ago instead of curling up in bed alone with her thoughts. 

But after her day, she wasn’t thinking properly. A synthetic had killed two people right in front of her, trying to get to her and kill her. If that wasn’t terrible enough, she’d lost her daughter for the second time. Ginny was truly gone. Although, she supposed Ginny had been gone for a long time and this pain was her finally accepting the loss.

She rushed to the door before Jeri could break it down, feeling lighter as soon as she saw her standing there. “Sorry,” she said, smiling apologetically. “I didn’t know it was you. I didn’t want to see anyone else.”
