for dutch petnames i did just give them my go-to cause well. it's my fic i can make them do what i want! 🤭
if you're looking for an all time classic i'd say 'schat(-je)', meaning (little) treasure is perfect. couples tend to start out with that one (or just babe/baby) and then move onto something more personalised. pet names here follow a very basic formula i feel.
step 1: figure out a noun suiting your partner. really any noun will do. say for lukey we could pick sunglasses, which would be zonnebril.
step 2: make it smaller. we loveee going for the diminutive, often achieved by adding -je or -tje at the end. little sunglasses = zonnebrilletje
step 3: make it yours. literally. adding my, mijn in dutch, before your pet name does wonders.
in our example pangi could call lukey 'mijn zonnebrilletje', my little sunglasses.
you may think this is silly. stupid. who would ever say that? unfortunately, the dutch do.
