It wasn’t any secret that everyone was neatly stacked into their bracket in the social hierarchy with the beloved cheerleaders, jocks, and social butterflies at the top and people like Piper at the bottom. At least that’s how it had always been at her old high school. You stayed in your lane, simply whirling around in your orbit, being kept in line with threats from those above you. Trying to break out never did anyone any good. It tended to make the alienation even worse, making the other kids single you out as a target.
But then again, this was a new high school. There was always the off chance that maybe it wouldn’t be so black and white here. And there was always the fact that she didn’t have to worry about the image of her gorgeous, blonde sisters clouding peoples’ judgement when they looked at her. She’d finally have to disappoint people on her own. If you could count that as an upside.
Besides, it didn’t even matter. She just had to make it through the year and she’d be free to do whatever she wanted. Travel across the country, go to college, get swept up in some whirlwind romance. The sky was the limit. And it was that promise alone that kept her from running out of this high school, screaming at the top of her lungs.
Okay, and maybe the strong, familiar smell of pot smoke wafting off the kid in front of her in her math class.
Thank god. At least she might have someone who could hook her up instead of her searching aimlessly for some sort of contact to replenish her stash.
So, she simply hoped for the best and leaned forward to give the boy in front of her a sharp tap on the shoulder.
