Have you ever noticed how certain missing persons cases dominate the news cycle, while others barely get a mention?
This isn’t random — it’s what researchers call Missing White Woman Syndrome. Stories of missing white women are amplified, dramatized, and made into “national tragedies,” while cases involving Black, Latina, and Indigenous women are often ignored.
This pattern doesn’t just reflect bias — it reinforces it. It tells us, over and over, whose lives we are supposed to value the most. And that silence can be deadly for those whose stories are erased.
Media equity matters. Every missing person deserves the same urgency, attention, and care. If we want justice, we have to call out these double standards and change the narrative.
