Mission:Wolf
I just returned home from a kickass weekend camping at a wolf sanctuary!

LOOK AT THAT CUTE FACE!
Mission:Wolf is outside of Westcliffe Colorado. They currently provide a home for 37 wolves. Most of these wolves were raised in captivity by private owners raising them as pets. It is illegal to own a pure wolf but if their is any percentage of dog in the mix they can be privately owned. Unfortunately it is rare that owners can be dedicated enough to meet the needs of a wild animal. Mission:Wolf finds wolves who are being neglected or even threatened to be put down because of fights with other dogs or biting humans and gives them a natural environment for them to live in.
For the most part wolves are just horribly misunderstood. There is no reason humans cannot raise a loving and safe wolf-dog, but they need to be aware of how a wolf's needs differ from a dog's. Primarily this has to do with issues of establishing dominance and understanding what is play and what is aggression. The best way to show a wolf or dog you are dominant is to ignore it (works on most humans too) and teach it that you may only interact with each other on your terms.
Mission:Wolf spends a good portion of the year touring the US with their "Ambassador Wolf" program. They tour with 3 of the most docile wolves and work to put some of the more dangerous wolf myths to rest.
I learned so much in just 24 hours there! More pictures, reflections and wolf trivia to follow in later posts.
