So I was your APN Secret Santa this year and this the first time I’ve ever done anything like this. You were super fun to message and get to know over the last few weeks!! A/N: I wrote this in a flash of inspiration and it came out sooo fluffy and I really hope you like it! Merry Christmas, love!

Fitz took a deep breath as he stood back and took in the newly decorated flat, nodding his head in satisfaction. A small smile graced his face as he set about taking all the newly-bought ornaments out of the bags and setting them out on the small coffee table in the living room. When he was finished, he smiled happily and hummed his way into the kitchen to get the hot cocoa started. Jemma would be home any minute, and he couldn’t wait to see the look on her face when she walked in.

It had been a hectic few months for him and Jemma. And not just for the two of them, of course, but they certainly had their fair share of ups and downs. Neither of them really had any false hopes that they might have a normal Christmas, but then again, this was their first Christmas since they’d been living together. And Fitz, being the stubborn Scot that he is, was determined to give Jemma some semblance of normalcy for their first Christmas under the same roof.

So when— by some stroke of cosmic design— he found himself with nearly the entirety of Christmas Eve free, he immediately went into overdrive. With Jemma working until late that evening, Fitz enlisted the help of Mack and Daisy, and dragged them shopping for a tree and decorations. With their combined help, he’d decked the small flat with all manner of twinkly, glittery, and shiny decor till the whole apartment seemed to buzz with the holiday spirit. But the tree, he insisted, was to be decorated by just the two of them. It had been his mother’s tradition to decorate the tree together on Christmas Eve, and Fitz was looking forward to sharing that tradition with Jemma.

So with a clap on the back from Mack, a kiss on the cheek from Daisy, and two promises not to say a word to Simmons should they speak to her, he was left alone to get the final preparations ready for Jemma’s imminent arrival.

He’d just put the milk on the stove to heat when he heard the sound of keys jangling in the lock. He fidgeted with the hem of his Christmas jumper as he stepped into the living room, scooping the second jumper he’d set aside for Jemma off the couch as the door opened and Jemma walked in.

“Fitz! I’m home—” her sentence gave way to a gasp as she stopped frozen in the doorway, eyes wide as she took in the decorations. When she finally met his gaze with tear-filled eyes, he couldn’t stop the grin that spread across his face.

“Merry Christmas, Jemma,” he half-whispered, holding out the jumper to her. She set her stuff down slowly, never taking her eyes off his face, and stepped forward to take the Christmas sweater from him. She let out a breathy giggle as she felt it, and Fitz stepped forward to shut the door behind her.

“Fitz! When on earth did you do all this? It’s beautiful,” she said in awe, getting distracted by all the decorations again. He shrugged and picked up her bag.

“I finished up everything I had this morning, and when I realized all the time I had I dragged Daisy and Mack shopping with me. Even got a tree,” he continued, shrugging a shoulder in its direction as he took Jemma’s things to her room. “Hey, would you mind checking the milk on the stove?” he yelled from the room, “It’s for the cocoa, I don’t want it to burn.” He heard Jemma laugh in disbelief before her answer came back to him.

“Of course I don’t mind, Fitz. I still can’t believe you did all this!”

He came into the kitchen in time to see her shaking her head as she stirred the mil, and he shrugged again.

“It’s our first Christmas in this flat together, Jemma, I couldn’t just do nothing.” He joined her next to the stove, smiling as he noticed she had shed her blazer and put the jumper on over her dress shirt. He nudged her to the side, causing her to laugh as he took over. “Why don’t you go change into some more comfortable clothes, and when you get back I’ll have the cocoa ready and we can put some music on and decorate the tree,” he told her softly, and his breath caught in his throat as she looked up at him with glistening eyes. No matter how long he’d known her, been in love with her, she still managed to take his breath away all over again nearly every day. She leaned up and gave him a soft kiss with a bright smile on her lips. Wordlessly, she followed his suggestion, and Fitz watched her go with another smile before turning back to the stove.

By the time she came back, dressed in simple black leggings and the oversized jumper, Fitz had two mugs of steaming hot cocoa in his hand, both drinks piled with whipped cream and crushed candy canes bits. Jemma took hers from him with a giggle and another quick kiss, but Fitz grabbed her and kissed her a second time before she could move away. Her eyes twinkled in amusement, and he let out a chuckle.

“Sorry. You look good in my jumper, that’s all.” Jemma glanced down at her sweater in surprise.

“This is yours?” she asked, before pulling the collar up to her nose and breathing in deeply. “Oh, well it certainly smells like you,” she added with a laugh. She looked back up to him curiously. “You have two Christmas jumpers? Why?”

“Well that one’s been mine for years,” he answered with a smile. He gestured to the jumper he was wearing before he continued. “I bought this one today. I was going to give it to you but I wanted you to have one with more meaning, I guess.” He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, but Jemma just grinned even wider.

“It’s wonderful, Fitz. Thank you,” she said softly. He simply nodded in reply, and moved to the stereo to start the music. As Frank Sinatra’s voice singing Christmas songs began to float around the room, he turned back to Jemma with a joyful smile.

“Now, shall we get started?” Jemma nodded enthusiastically, bouncing slightly as she took a sip of her cocoa. Fitz nearly threw his head back in laughter as she pulled the mug down from her face, and Jemma stared at him in confusion. The whipped cream had left a line across the top of her lip, and Fitz thought it looked adorable. He quickly closed the distance between them and kissed her, longer this time, licking his lips as he pulled away. “Mmmm, whipped cream!” Jemma huffed as the realization hit her and smacked his shoulder in mock frustration, but she couldn’t hide the smile in her eyes. Laughing, Fitz set his mug down on the table and grabbed a string of lights. Jemma set her mug down too, and the two of them began to decorate the tree.

Two hours, three tickle fights, four mugs of cocoa, and a slow dance later, Jemma and Fitz were curled up on the couch, surveying their handiwork in satisfaction. The lights in the flat had been either dimmed or turned off completely, leaving just the Christmas lights and the fake fireplace in the corner as the only sources of light. The couple was exhausted, but it was the satisfying kind that comes from a job well done. Fitz hummed happily as Jemma burrowed closer into his side, resting his head against hers as she snuggled into his shoulder. A few seconds later she spoke, sounding as if she was half-asleep.

“I’m glad you waited to decorate the tree, Fitz,” she mumbled softly into his shoulder, and Fitz tightened his hold around her briefly in response.

“Wouldn’t have had it any other way, Jemma,” he answered, his thumb absentmindedly rubbing circles onto her shoulder. “When I was a kid, my mum and I would decorate our tree together every Christmas Eve. She said she used to do it with dad every year they were together. I wanted to do the same with you,” he continued in a soft voice, and he could feel Jemma smile into his shoulder.

“Thank you, Fitz. For everything,” she whispered, and Fitz kissed the top of her head in answer.

They sat in a comfortable silence for a little while longer, before Fitz suddenly realized something. He glanced at his watch, and sure enough, it was ten after midnight. It was Christmas morning. He lifted his head off of Jemma’s, and she mumbled a little at his movement. She sat up slightly, lifting her head up to face him.

“Is everything ok?” she asked groggily, and Fitz smiled at her softly.

“More than.” He showed her his watch. “It’s Christmas,” he said simply, and Jemma smiled. He leaned down to capture her lips in a long, gentle kiss. She hummed softly as he pulled away, and for a minute he got lost in her beautiful eyes. He finally broke the gaze to kiss her forehead, and she giggled as his lips brushed her skin.

“That tickles,” she murmured, and Fitz chuckled as she buried her face back into his shoulder. She went quiet, and Fitz thought she must have fallen asleep. But half a second later, she spoke again.

“Merry Christmas, Fitz.” Her voice was barely audible, thick with sleep, but audible all the same. Fitz smiled into her hair and closed his eyes before replying.

“Merry Christmas, Jemma.”

3. fantasy or sci-fi: Growing up with Harry Potter, I guess fantasy. But I think sci-fi’s make better adaptations, since I’ve been struggling to read for two years. I’m not much of a fan of either or huge fan of both (I’m not sure which is correct) because I haven’t read enough of either genre, but… fantasy, I think.

6. Bad plot with good characters or good plot with bad characters: Actual bookish people, please don’t hate me, but I’m more of a plot person. A good plot can keep me reading until the end, but bad plots make me severely impatient and annoyed. I always try to visualise things as I read, therefore a good plot with bad characters gives me much more clarity and the feeling of immersion than the reverse does. But the characters should definitely not be bad to the point of really, really, really bad.

23. Be your favourite character or be their best friend: Be them when it’s an adventure, be their best friend when it’s drama or comedy. In that case I’d looooooooove to be entertained as a spectator as I also try to talk, and maybe smack, some sense into my best friend as she screws up again and again.
