The next day, they investigate a field. It’s pretty quiet. Griffen tries to strike up a conversation. “Sooooo, how did Mr Potai become your dad?”
“We are not friends, so there’s no reason for you to act like we are.”
Griffen frowns and goes silent. After a while, he speaks again. “Can you at least tell me why we’re looking here? It wouldn’t exactly be hard to see someone out here.”
“Ugh. You know her griffin form is tiny, right?! And besides, we’re just looking for clues. I only saw a glimpse of who took her.”
“Wait, she was kidnapped?!”
“Yes. I only saw her gem, before she disappeared with Olive.”
“Wow, I-”
“Shut up!” Heidi quickly runs over to something shining. It was some sort of tooth on a necklace. Heidi tried hiding her tears, but Griffen saw them. He decided not to say anything.
“Hers?”
Heidi nods. Griffen cautiously puts a wing around her shoulder and lets her cry.
She suddenly perks up. “She-she’s nearby?”
“How do you know?”
“We have a connection, okay? I can feel her . . .” Heidi stands up and spins around. “That way!”
Griffen flies after Heidi. They enter a small grove near desert-like cliffs. Heidi continues to lead Griffen. They freeze.
