Criticizing Songs
Most songs are pretty upfront about their meaning. “I love you”, “I hate you”, “You should totally date me”, “I'll make you regret ever breaking up with me”, and “I am a Sex God, so love me” are just a few messages you’re likely to hear on the radio. But some artists are a little less blunt about it, and leave room for interpretation when it comes to some of their songs.
I absolutely love it when artists aren't straight-forward with some of their songs. Even more so if they make you really think about what the true meaning of the song. Sometimes some songs have double meaning and other times the meaning is hidden behind cleverly place words and sentences. Or the songs true meaning is hidden behind the first message so that it's not that obvious to the listeners.
Here are just a few songs that are always interrupted incorrectly...
“Possession" by Sarah McLachlan which is about a stalker (many thought it was a love song).
“Hotel California” by The Eagles which have two meaning, (1) About a visit to a whore house; (2) About going to a place where drugs are always available. But the main/real meaning is about living life to the extreme and/or living in emotional excess.
“Every Breath You Take” by Police is about amidst feelings of jealousy and obsession over a lost lover. It's a stalker-like vibe of the lyrics were inspired by the desire for surveillance and control he (Sting, the lead singer) was feeling during his divorce. But many mistake it for a sweet love song.
“My Hero” by Foo Fighters is about ordinary people who did extraordinary things (and not about Kurt Cobain).
There are many more songs then that, and nearly every artist has one or two in their albums that have deeper meaning or messages than people think. Also remember that a song isn't always straight-forward! It's irritating when someone criticizes a song without knowing their facts about it. Just because a song is titled, “Angel Dust” doesn't mean it's about a drug or a druggie taking it. It's just a title and titles of songs aren't always related to the meaning of the song. Just like a book, or the cover doesn't always tell you want the contents are.
