Dragon Age Kiss Week - Day 5: Battlefield
Pre-game Rooks, coz we all happened to have Veil Jumpers
Casey belongs to @yesistolethisurl and I borrowed Ellie from @mistressandry too!
She senses she's got a patient before she's actually shouted for. The commotion as a party returns to camp, the clamouring to get a look at them, the elders waving everyone off and telling them to go back to what they were doing and stop rubbernecking. Strife's voice cuts through the din, shouting over to Casey so she can jump to action.
As Strife approaches her medic's area, Casey spots who's behind him; a pair of dwarves Casey recognises as Branwen and Ellie, with the latter helping the former walk. Both look battle-worn, but Branwen is clearly the one who needs her attention first. Casey is quickly becoming familiar with these two. "Let me guess: sentinels, again?"
The pair nod sheepishly. They're used to this dance now, and so Ellie helps get Branwen over to the cot nearby. "In our defence, they were dormant."
Strife rolls his eyes. "Yes, until you broke the artefact they were protecting."
"Accidentally!" They say in unison.
"It's not our fault it fell off and smashed!"
"Well, I mean you did knock into it."
"Butters! Don't betray me like this!"
"Enough!" The dwarves' mouths snap shut. Strife pinches the bridge of his nose. "This one's mostly fine, she's done something to her leg."
"And my nose," chimes Branwen. Looking at her properly, Casey can see the remnants of blood above her lip and down her chin, running into her beard. "Though I think I snapped it back into place." She scrunches her nose over and over again, testing its movement. Strife closes his eyes, and Casey can just imagine him counting to ten in his head.
After a pause he says, "I'm going to go check on everyone else. Casey, good luck."
To Casey's relief, both of her patients know the drill and are more than co-operative with her. Branwen's patch up job on her nose was better than expected, but still no replacement for actual healing, and as her bone cracked back into place Branwen inhaled a snotty, but healthy breath. "Ahhhh I'd forgotten what breathin' normal felt like."
"So you're saying your snoring is coz of the nose?"
"If mine's from a broken nose, then wha's yer excuse?"
Ellie clutches her proverbial pearls. "Me? Snore? Never. But that rasping you call breathing…Well, it can't be healthy, can it Miss Casey?"
Casey holds her hands up, "I am not getting involved," and leaves them to continue winding one another up whilst she finishes cleaning up. All clean, she goes into Healer Casey mode. "So. Your leg is fine now, but take a few days off to rest it. Ideally a week, if you can manage. I don't want to see you back in here again because you undid all my hard work, you hear me?" The dwarves nod. "And please wear a helmet. The cartilage in your nose is already wearing thin."
"I'll try," says Branwen, "but I can't promise anything. I just haven't found one that I mind bein' on me 'ead yet."
Casey shakes her head, though knows this fight isn't worth her energy. She reaches back to her worktable and retrieves a pair of small jars, handing one to each dwarf. "Here. Apply this to your wounds whilst they finish healing. It'll help with the scarring."
Branwen stashes hers in her pack and, as she's rearranging, her eyes light up. "Oh! Here! As thanks for fixin' me up." She pulls out a paper parcel and hands it to Casey. "They, err, might be a lil' squished, but they'll still taste good."
When the dwarves have left and taken their chaos with them, Casey opens the paper parcel and inspects its contents. Inside are a pair of doughy, jam-filled treats covered in powdered sugar. The famous Aldwir Halla's Kisses. And only slightly flattened.
Casey smiles to herself. These will go nicely with a hot chocolate tonight.
