Today I learned that King Tushratta of Mitani once received a somewhat lacking gift from his ally Pharaoh Amenhotep III, so he sent him an incredibly passive aggressive letter that basically amounted to:

'So when I unwrapped these gifts, in front of all my courtiers, there were *some* people who said they didn't look like they were all made of gold. *I* didn't say it, but they did. Also they said that if they had received gifts like that, they would think the person who sent them didn't love them. Again, their words not mine. Anyway, it was kind of embarrassing. Thought you ought to know.

PS. I'd hate for this to come between us right before my daughter was supposed to marry you. Just saying.'
