The actor [Mitchell Kosterman, Sheriff Ethan] particularly enjoyed working with John Schneider. “We got along really well,” he says. “We're about the same age, we both have families. He's a very down-to-earth, normal type of guy. We talked about different sorts of saws, and putting a coat of varnish on your porch. He's a consummate actor, and really understands the process – he's very generous and non-critical in the way he helps you out.” Kosterman recalls the scene in Nocturne when Ethan joins the Kents when they go visit the parents of Byron (Nocturne's 'Freak of the Weak'). “We were supposed to go up to this door, and knock on it,” he explains. “John says, 'So why do you think we're here?' That's a typical John thing to do – not, 'let's search our motivation' or use all the worn-out 'actor' phrases. The point is, why were we there? He'd tell you something in such a way that it never contradicted what you said, or criticized you. He was always augmenting – and if he did change something, he did it in such a way that you felt you were getting to change it.”
