"You know taking a picture of a monster doesn't exactly count as 'experience,' right?" "Ugh!" Mara threw her hands up. "I said, I'm not an idiot! I'll prove it to you, and then maybe then you'll be able to get what I mean through your thick head. Maybe." "Okay," I replied, crossing my arms, "sounds good. Prove it." "Get dressed in normal clothes again and I'll meet you at the kitchen door in ten minutes." "The kitchen door?" My righteous indignation experienced a hiccup. She put her hands on her hips, undetered. "We're going on a field trip."

Mercy, More than Sacrifice

Okay, so at the moment it's more concepts and ideas as opposed to anything actually written, but I do have several dialogue snippet ideas, a la "incorrect quotes" vibes. So here, have a few.

Lyn: Okay, everyone, let's just all calm down a second and put down our weapons, okay? *gestures to herself and Rei* We don't want to fight you. Rei: *pointed silence* Lyn, sighing: okay, so I don't want to fight you and he'll listen if I ask nicely.

Rei: *cutting through their ropes* Lyn: hmph, all that "no powers" talk. I'm becoming increasingly convinced that you have a superpower and it's just. Knife. Any time you need one. There's just. A knife. Rei: Well, I have always been pretty edgy. Come on let's go.

Rei: *facepalming* Rei: does anyone have any ideas that DON'T involve noble, heroic sacrifices for the greater good? Like, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but what if we just... arrested the guy?

Sent Through the Motions

Simple, clever. Not good. But if I told Drake that I had a dragon in the house, that was going to cause more problems than solve them. "What if a squirrel gets in through a window?" I asked with as good of a laugh as I could muster. "It would catch that," Stanton said with a grin, "we will want ways for you to cancel the alarm, too, so that we don't send out the cavalry to fend off a loose rabbit." "This could probably have some good applications for pest control," I said, trying to add on to the joke, trying not to think about the 'pest' in my bedroom. "You could say that's how it's already being used," Moira remarked drolly. She paused. "Not saying that Talsic is a pest, but like, if he turned out to be dangerous, et cetera." "Of course," I agreed, rubbing sweaty palms on my jeans.

Playacting the Host

Chapter 4 of A Four-Dimensional Plot is now live for the public!

Part of me hoped that it was someone I could simply shut the door on, but logic (and past experience) warned me that, more likely, they were from CENCA. Especially if there were any important calls that I had missed, or, perhaps, a whole work shift. With any luck, though, they wouldn’t be coming in person to fire me—that seemed too inefficient a use of resources for their style.  Pressing my eye to the door’s peekhole, I held my breath. As I had half-hoped, half-feared, Stanton was there, with Moira Bentley—and this time, he’d remembered his coat. His hands were pushed deep into the pockets of said coat, as if he were bracing himself for cold, even though it was warmer today than last night. When I looked out the peekhole again, he cast a glance at the door that I could only describe as anxious. I drew back, fighting down the impression that he had seen me.

Worldbuilding Mithaedrir's magic system (world where A Four-Dimensional Plot takes place) and with the way things are set up I realize that there is room in their society for Magic IT departments and Magic Law departments (not to mention Magic Bluecollar Workers) and my brain is kinda tickled by the possibilities.
