So two of my FAVORITE professors just got a paper published on mitochondrial research I've been excited about since Dr. Hood told us in mammology class a little about it.
Like wanting to get a physical copy of the Scientific Reports journal it's published in and get both them and their lab members to sign it excited.
One of the other collaborators, Emma, is a certified bird bander that is one of the founders for Banding Coalition of the Americas and has helped to track a lot of birds on their migratory paths through the western hemisphere (shown below releasing a banded tufted titmouse with my daughter getting to be a launch pad. Little guy liked her so much he stopped yelling at us and kinda chilled in Sophie's hand for a moment).
But this is BIG big. Like might prove that mitochondrial DNA functions with regular DNA when it comes to evolution and rewrite our understanding of how that works big.
At the very least, learning how mitochondrial functions affect migratory is gonna be really cool.
And srsly, I might have just outed my tumblr account to real people I highly respect, but I am just that excited over this paper!
