Miucina makes her 3D debut! This is just a practice exercise, so I have no plans for this model. This time I'm using simple materials instead of textures, so I can really enjoy the lighting!

A birthday present I drew a while ago for @thejohnsu! I had told him a while ago I would make 100 drawings of his character, Miucina, and little did he know I wasn’t kidding. (+1 Alder)

Process details below

Here’s a couple of snapshots of what this looked like in production.

First I started with a static sketch that would capture the idea:

then I sketched out some other frames in Flash to see if it would look good in motion

Looks good! For the next part, I worked on the background since I wanted to establish the lighting and ambiance before coloring Miucina herself. So I imported one of the frames into Clip Studio and painted it. The entire background is colored with gradient maps so it actually looks like this:

Each color group was basically its own layer. The mushrooms were exported separately so they could be in front of Miucina (a fact which is barely noticeable in the final product).

Miucina herself was then drawn in Flash, but as a number of distinct moving parts collected into a symbol made up of approximately this many pieces:

which I would then assemble and position:

I like using Flash for this type of animation because I have about 14 frames of motion here, and if I discover I need to adjust one of the graphics I can update the symbol and have that automatically propagate across the other frames.

I manually keyed each frame and didn’t use any software tweening because I really like the aesthetic of this variable frame rate. Seeing everything animated on ones just doesn’t do it for me. Sometimes an uneven distribution of details is more interesting than a uniform density, both in time and space.
