with every breath she struggled under the pressure of being alone.
this was nothing different and nothing new. the past years of her life haven’t exactly been the most emotionally fulfilling. she didn’t let it consume her; not even the smallest bite of loneliness could she allow to maim her heart, especially at work. these were not thoughts that preoccupied her often, but they loomed over her tonight under the warmth of the masquerade lights. the moment Seolhyun’s heel clicked on the party’s floor, a forced smile strained on her lips in the midst of being alone.
couples and friends mingled; even the masks everyone donned could not hide the bright eyes of people laughing with their loved ones.
Seolhyun looked to her side, to north, south, east, and west. faces she didn’t know, sharing loveliness and good feelings with one another. bodies and garments swayed and their movement never ceased.
she spent about twenty minutes standing idly before noticing a darker area of the place. there were chairs and elegant, little round tables each meant clearly for pairs. couples were currently dancing, so the tables were all empty save for a single table towards the back.
a man seeming to be around her age sat hunched over with a drink in hand. he didn’t look like he was having any more of a good time than she was, so in the midst of an emotional crisis and behind the glamour of anonymity, seolhyun took the seat across from him with a small smile.
“This the Lonely Hearts Club? ‘Cause I thought there’d be more people.”
