I Became a God in a Horror Game is a novel under the Unlimited Flow genre. I previously posted an unli flow rec list on my main, so you can check that out! Granted, I should probably write a new rec list since that one is old.

What I like about GHG is that it gives its side characters their own narrative arcs. Its instances also have a deeper message, and each one actually ties into the overarching plot. Most unli flow novels aren’t like that, with instances being episodic and supporting characters being mere props to highlight the protagonists. So, if you want something similar to GHG, you won’t find much.

I am yet to find an unli flow that is as good as GHG, but imma list a few that has at least two of the following factors:

A clever/intelligent protagonist like Bai Liu

Instances are meaningful/tie into the overarching plot

Supporting characters have depth/are not completely sidelined

In no particular order—

The Earth is Online = Best in thriller/suspense and complex instances. Not so good in romance and character depth. (But the side character Bai Ruoyao is very compelling.)

I Upended Yet Another Campus Urban Legend = Best in horror and romance. MC isn’t genius-level, but he’s intelligent enough to be included here.

High Energy QR Code = Best in meaningful instances. Diverse characters, but prose is a bit flat. MC is both intelligent and compassionate

Mist = The sole novel having organic origins for the “Unlimited Flow.” Intelligent MC.

Welcome to the Nightmare Live = I’ve got mixed feelings about this. It starts out mid, but the more you read it, the more enjoyable it gets. Side characters often take a backseat, but they are nonetheless diverse and interesting. MC is very fun.

I Have to Start Acting Like a Care (title tl note) = I haven’t actually read past the first instance yet, but the main CP is interesting and the first instance was also intriguing. The male lead is also a lot like Bai Ruoyao from The Earth is Online

I Am a Flower Vase in an Infinite Flow World = protag isn’t smart like the MC’s in the other novels, but he isn’t stupid either. His character growth is also amazing. Instances are meaningful, and his relationship with his best friend is both fun and heartwarming. The ML is, well, your typical danmei ML.

This Player Must Be Using Plug-ins! (title on NU is This Character is Suspected of Cheating!, but I hate that translation) = Clever and witty protagonist. I do not know yet who ML is. There are several characters who could be ML, but author note implies this isn’t a harem. Anyways, the rest who aren’t ML make a very good supporting cast

Streaming the Unlimited Flow, but as a Spectator = I also haven’t finished this, but it has an interesting premise and good romance and instances. Both MC and ML are intelligent

Escape the Infinite Chamber = Good horror and the only novel with explicit smut on this list. There are things I don’t like about it, but it was still a good experience in general

You ever think about how funny it is that the entire cast is obsessed with Xia Fei? Vein: looks out for him; pats his head gently; is on speed dial; "Felix's friends are my friends;" probably slaughters people for him next season. LX: tries to befriend him with a bday gift a whole month early unlike with LTC where he wants others to chase him; gets peeved enough to flop his tetris game bc XF called those two losers his friends instead; one-sided yearner so bad he's "that's what I like about you" and complaining about not being liked in return. CXS: called XF hot on several different occasions; always ready to throw hands; stayed outside waiting for his text despite ten minutes until a meeting that could tell him about his dad; still worrying over him next season; showed off XF in the selfie they took together. LG: always reading XF's magazines; called him a friend which was super put-of-pocket but whatever. I'll take it. QL: is the one buying his magazines. CWM: also pat his head. genuinely how did XF achieve this from both him and Vein. It'd be really funny if even LTC jumped on this trend next season but I want him to be a hater instead. Much funnier that way.

do you also find it strange that in ep5 e soul has the same costume at the start when saving YC and at the end during the convention? we know the suit YC has is from 5ish years ago, so why would e soul look the exact same when he rescued him as current time in YC's story? it's possible he's just wearing an old costume for the event, but do you think it's possible also that maybe the real reason YC's trust value was at complete 0 isn't because he was an orphan like what was said but instead because he consistently lied his whole life about being saved by e soul as part of a fantasy to cope? it could make sense if he just envisions e soul saving him that he just sees e soul as he is, not a time-accurate version of him when thinking back on the memory. plus, the figure + mask he has with him in the orphanage is a very clearly different design to the e soul we see rescue him (at least the helmet- the body design is very similar still. it actually looks most similar to a simplified version of the e soul suit we see in his pv), which could just be a case of him having so many suits but you'd think as a kid he would cling specifically to the exact image of the person who saved him.

But when analyzing media, there are two ways to go about it: plot-level and thematic-level

E-Soul having the same costume when he saved Yang Cheng and during the convention should be analyzed on a thematic level. The convention scene is intertwined with Yang Cheng saving Youzi, and that scene is also paralleled with the time E-Soul saved him:

So E-Soul wearing his old costume should be a callback to Yang Cheng’s past. Before, it was Yang Cheng who had to be saved; but now, it’s Yang Cheng doing the saving.

This is also one way of visually setting up Yang Cheng as E-Soul’s replacement. While the other E-Soul actors are sitting all prim and proper at a convention, one out there is doing the actual hero work. It’s no longer just an act for Yang Cheng. He’s being the hero he’s always wanted to be.

I also don’t think Yang Cheng’s past is just a lie. Because if he wasn’t saved by E-Soul, then who did? And why would he fantasize about E-Soul specifically? And in the case those villains just somehow left him alone coz they didn’t want to bother with a kid, then it still won’t make sense. If nobody saved Yang Cheng back then, then wouldn’t he grow up to resent heroes? But that isn’t the case with adult!Yang Cheng.

The show has been presenting it clearly: Yang Cheng’s zero trust value stems from his low self-esteem. He doesn’t even believe in himself, so how could others believe in him?

As for the mask he has in the orphanage, there are several possibilities:

He was still recovering from trauma and couldn’t clearly remember what the mask looked like

He wasn’t skilled enough yet to make it exactly like E-Soul’s (we know he makes his own costumes)

That orphanage scene was months or years after his parents were murdered, and E-Soul had changed costumes again. Little Yang Cheng just wanted to be accurate and copy E-Soul’s new costume. Otherwise, the other kids would bully him more for getting it wrong

I think option 3 is the most likely explanation here.

Sorry, but I’ve also deleted them from the bin! I actually announced three weeks ago that I was going to take them down. It’s just been delayed coz I’ve been busy. I heard Crunchyroll has been having issues with the Chinese audio lately too, so I’m really sorry about this, but I needed the space. I’m on a Mega free plan limited to 20gb, and the TBHX folder consumed 14gb of that . If I could afford any of their paid plans, I wouldn’t have minded keeping it up for long 🥲

just did… and I honestly don’t know how to feel about it… although i’ve considered the idea that Vein might’ve forgotten his memories post-death, seeing it play out in a CHIBI episode first felt kind of… well, not really underwhelming…but I feel like it wasn’t enough? like, such a big emotional thing should’ve been shown first in a proper episode of the actual show…
