It’s James and Sirius. Their animagi were a stag and a dog. And then a generation later Harry and Ron comes along, and their patronuses are a stag and a dog. They’re the Gryffindor teenage best friends whose personalities reflect a stag and a dog.
So it’s both JKR’s ridiculously good storytelling, always tying the past to the present, always having the future reflect the past. But it’s also the emotional impact of literally having Harry and Ron take up the mantel of James and Sirius, the legendary Gryffindor teenage best friends.
