summary ・ On a quiet evening, Hayabusa and Hanabi share their thoughts and feelings with each other over the years. And they come to a revelation.
author's note ・ fuck canon skins & lore! moneyton can pry hayagura & hanhana from my cold dead hands! and before anyone says, i do like hanabi; i just hate the fact they made her move on from hayabusa, then reigned her back in to be his simp again. she looks like a fucking clown! let my girl free!
fun fact ・ i couldn't decide which two pairs this would be ( hayagura&hanhana or hanagura&hanhaya ), so i relied on a coin flip and ended up with the first pairs.
Two ninjas stand beside each other on the roof of their residence.
Hayabusa and Hanabi both stare up at the moon, yet neither one speaks. The quiet isn't awkward or tense; it's companionable, borne from years of rivalry, companionship, failed romance, sense of betrayals, and then, acceptance. So many things have happened over the years. So many bloodshed, so many tears, so many mistakes.
"You chose the right path, Hayabusa," Hanabi speaks, eyes on him. His expression must have told a hundred different things, as he had been reminiscing the past.
He looks down at his hands, clenching and unclenching them. Then he speaks, "Is it truly the right path... letting my brother's killer live freely among us? Pardoning him, on the condition he doesn't pick up yet another demon sword?"
A heavy sigh comes from him, resigned. "I feel as though I have failed my brother."
Hanabi doesn't speak yet, her look thoughtful, as she watches her childhood friend. She had watched him grow, had admired him from afar, and had stood by his side through it all. She likes to think she knows him best.
"Kuren would not have wanted you to thread down that path," she says surely. "You were headed down for ruin, letting your hate, anger, and need for vengeance consume you. You would have fallen to Hanekage if you had continued. I... understand that better than anyone."
Their eyes meet, a quiet conversation passing between them. Their shared history consists of tales from friends, to rivals, to lovers, to enemies, and back to being friends.
"I let my jealousy of your skills and hatred of Kagura's closeness to you almost consume me." These are facts he knows since she had told him before, along with the fact she had learned to grow stronger when she let them go.
"I chose myself," she says quietly, hand over her chest. "More than I chose fleeting feelings and hopeless dreams. And when I did, Higanbana chose me and showed me how I can lead Hanzo back to the light. When the time comes... you will be chosen too. By someone who will lead you back and show you the right way."
Hayabusa doesn't understand, perhaps not yet, because he had not been chosen for anything in his life. Kuren is the one chosen as Heir to the Shadow Sect... until he died; Hayabusa is only the replacement.
"Is there really someone like that out there for me?" he asks, unsure.
Hanabi's smile is knowing, her eyes swimming with mirth, as though the answer is plain and obvious. He just doesn't see it yet.
"Hayabusa! Hanabi!" a voice calls from down below.
Kagura smiles up at them, waving her hand enthusiastically. Beside her stands their former enemy, a man who drove them down their paths, and now serves as both a lesson in caution... and redemption. Hanzo.
Hayabusa's hands clench minutely, his eyes narrowed at the man down below. Part of him wants to honor the truce and Hanabi's wishes, since she can somehow reign in Hanzo effortlessly. Another part of him wants to keep him away from Kagura, knowing how trusting she can be and how dangerous Hanzo can become.
"Dinner's ready!" Kagura calls, oblivios to Hayabusa's plight.
"We'll be done in a minute, Kagura!" Hanabi calls back, before turning to Hayabusa. "Do you see now?"
Hayabusa doesn't. Not immediately. His eyes narrow, confused and irritated, as Hanabi gestures to the two figures down below. Kagura smiles and talks animatedly with Hanzo, and Hanzo responds. He looks... softer, gentler than Hayabusa remembers of the man who would have burned everything down to ashes just for a taste of power.
"You've really changed him," he admits.
Hanabi shakes her head. "He would not have changed if he did not want to. He chose that for himself."
"Because of you."
"Because someone chose him... just as someone already chose you. All you have to do... is look."
Hanabi leaves him with those words playing in his mind. She jumps and joins the other two, before turning on Hanzo's arm and dragging him back inside. For all of Hanzo's protests, he doesn't pull away from Hanabi's grip; he only smiles fondly.
Hayabusa turns his attention to the only other person left: Kagura. Her eyes shine as bright as the moon, soft as the twinkling stars. She has chosen to stay; she has chosen to wait for him.
He jumps down in front of her.
"You stayed," he says.
Kagura smiles. "For you."
Someone already chose you. Hanabi's words echo in his mind. Chosen.
Without thinking too much about it, he pulls down his face covering and leans in to plant a soft kiss on Kagura's forehead. The touches lingers for a moment, before he leans back and smiles at her.
"For you," he echoes.
