Clay School (Clay Office & Conference Center) Address: 453 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Built: 1888 Architect: J. B. Tarleton

In 1873, a frame school building was built on what was then known as Pitcher Street, just west of Cass Avenue. That structure was moved and replaced with this 2-story Italianate schoolhouse. It is erected primarily of brick. Stone trim is also used throughout. A high basement extends above the ground and is marked on the exterior. For most of its life, the Clay was topped by a wooden tower, or cupola.

The Clay School was named in honor of Henry Clay (1777-1852), accomplished lawyer, statesman and orator. Clay was the foremost proponent of the American System, an economic plan that played an important role in shaping American policy during the first half of the 19th century. The plan is rooted in the “American School” ideas of Alexander Hamilton.

From 1888 to 1923, the Clay School served as an elementary school, including a stint as an annex of the nearby Burton School. In 1924, the building reopened as a school for boys with behavioral issues. In the decades following, the building was used for a variety of educational and medical purposes.

In 1981, the Clay School was purchased by and subsequently converted into office space.
