Chapter 21 and real life
I was re-reading chapter 21 and I think it's really ingenious that Evolvers being persecuted by the public reminds me of real-life conflict between majority vs minority.
The discrimination and prejudice against Evolvers is the same as how the public view minority groups. Lots of ethnic or social groups are persecuted in this world. But that doesn't mean that the minority are 100% purely innocent victims. The thought that the oppressed minority are entirely morally clean is just an illusion.
That is true to Evolvers as well. Many are just ordinary people trying to live their lives like the elevator repair guy in chapter 13 and Doctor Song. But there are some group of evolvers who went down a dark path *cough Black Swan with their Evol superiority *cough STF with their inflated sense of authoritarianism. (Although STF was more about military dictatorship)
There are people like Josie, who started out as a victim, just a poor girl who lost her family, but she was tricked by BS and was blinded by her thirst for vengeance that she caused the fire accident that nearly killed Yōurán and Gavin.
Both sides are blinded by their bias of the other, and cause chaos and spread hatred to those that we consider "weaker" than us.
I think it was in chapter 11, when Yōurán went over her father's notes and concluded that whether it be Evolvers or Non-Evolvers, they were just equal people. Yōurán's father taught her well. We need more people like her in real life.
