MMA FIGHTER’S UNION
Huge news for MMA, MMA pioneers Randy Couture, Cung Le, Ken Shamrock and Leslie Smith, join together in hopes of starting a fighter’s union, the Mixed Martial Arts Fighter’s Association(MMAFA).
Now as you all know, there has been talks of fighter’s wanting a fighter’s union to protect their rights, health, self-interests, and most of all, fighter’s pay. We all don’t know much about what happens behind close doors when fighter’s get into the signing of contracts, but we definitely know about the UFC Reebok deal that’s been screwing fighter’s out of opportunities to make hundreds of thousands of dollars in sponsorship money. As for fighter’s purse money, I agree with the fact that it all depends on how much tickets and pay-per-views you can sell in terms of prize money, in the end of the day the promotion is a business and needs to make money for it to stay profitable. Not to mention the UFC only being around for no more than 20 years, but I also think with the UFC’s recent $4 billion dollar sale that this is a huge step for MMA, proving the value and popularity of this sport, this well definitely show an increase in fighter’s prize money moving forward.
The UFC have been vocal about not supporting a fighter’s union, and have gone to extreme measures by sending letters out to all fighters urging them not to join any unions, I’m really not sure on what their reasoning is behind it, there is clearly different views being had.
So what does everyone think about a fighter’s union? Would you agree that this needs to happen? Or do you think it will cause too many problems with getting the good fights to happen and turn out like boxing. Post your thoughts!
