I haven't watched Kyuranger so I was wondering how you think the series could be adapted for Power Rangers (I can't see them using the Zyuohger footage).

oh boy. i’m having a hard time envisioning it, honestly... (zyuoh seems pretty unmarketable yeah and isn’t it already confirmed after hammi chameleon green somehow ended up in that piece of PR artwork?)

i’d imagine they’d probably try to downplay the space theme; instead of a rebel alliance in an already taken-over universe maybe they’re more like. refugees from destroyed planets who all end up displaced on earth? 🤔 and now earth is the next target, so they all band together to protect it. or something like that?

admittedly having not watched any PR more recent than RPM it’s tough for me to get into the mindset of the franchise’s current state. if i was mr saban i wouldn’t do kyu at all, but. having 12 entire rangers to sell toys of probably sounds like music to their ears at the moment. here’s hoping they pull one of their old tricks and turn at least one of the guy rangers into a lady.

Can I just say it's funny that you're talking about Sentai RPGs and Power Rangers is doing a livestream of their own RPG on Twitch?

what a coincidence... i did hear about that. so their game is like. power rangers themed? i don’t know anything about dnd (that’s what it is, right?) and all these shows nowadays where people play tabletop games are kind of beyond me but that sounds pretty fun

I imagine so many of the rangers as females because 2/12 is ridiculous, even for Sentai.

it’s so bad. i love parts of kyu but this ratio got me truly suffering. to think gransazer did better 13 years ago... actually i’ve been thinking a lot lately about how recent toku is somehow worse to its women than stuff that aired a decade or more ago and it’s really troubling? i wish i knew how things managed to regress like this cause it fucking sucks big time

Part of me wonders if they keep the same personality for the main rider because it's more marketable. I noticed Sentai and Power Rangers doing the same thing with their red rangers. Like we haven't had a Hiromu or Scott type in a while.

yeah i guess at the end of the day straightforward niceboys are probably easier for kids to relate to and imagine themselves as. (and then the writers pawn off the less admirable personality traits on the secondaries and tertiaries.) but even kids probably get tired of seeing the same type of hero over and over again, y’know? i think i would’ve if i’d watched KR as a child. so even marketing-wise i’d say it’s about time for a switch-up. shinnosuke was a bit different but it’s been 2 yrs since drive, so it’s like. aight. time to shake things up again in this here kamen rider

TBH, I think Sentai could only go as dark as the new Power Rangers movie.

yeah that’s probably a good way to put it. it could have a few “real world” kind of issues for the characters and maybe someone dies at some point in a non-graphic way, but anything more than that is pushing it.

i suppose sentai was also a bit darker back in the day, like with the non-fake half of goranger and the beginning of JAKQ and everyone dying at the start of liveman. but all of those shows end up turning softer/goofier as they go on. sentai just wasn’t really meant to be like that i don’t think.

...So does Makoto not have any moms? This wouldn't be the first time toku doesn't mention a character's mom. *Gives a side-eye to recent Power Rangers seasons*

well actually sin specter has revealed a fairly good reason for him not having any moms (though of course i wish it were otherwise), since he was basically created in a tank by a mad scientist. his other dad who “adopted” him was i guess a lifelong bachelor? or at least never had a serious S/O while his kids were young, so no mom there. and makoto considered takeru’s dad a father as well, but takeru’s mom died when he was a baby, so no mom there either.

all in all pretty solid-though-convoluted reasoning for not having a mother presence, i’d say.

I realized it a while ago, but Liveman came out around the same time as Metalder, the most depressing Metal Heroes, and Kamen Rider Black. Both first episodes feature somebody dying. What was going on in the late 1980s in Japan?

i wonder... perhaps it was just a general sense of misery that the coolest decade was drawing to a close. even toku turned grim as everyone had a vague & terrible premonition of the 90s fashions soon to come
