There is no evidence they had a relationship, but historical fiction (and films) have established this myth, as scandal sells books. What it's worse: "serious" historians taking it as true. Even if I'm not a Marie-Antoinette enthusiast, I have personally dismissed these stories as "myth" and I am extremely annoyed everytime a book or a movie brings them up. Zweig had an excuse, but "new" biographers certainly had not. And they aren't as great writers as he was.

:) Besides, the truth, the terrible truth, is: Waterloo doesn't fascinate me that much? Napoleonic forums discuss the battle forever (especially the ones in English language), but that results in a sort of... overload for me.

Wow! Thank you! I always considered my English to be at some medium level as I still make silly mistakes here and there and I just finished reading my first book in English a month ago - "Poltava" by Peter Englund ( thanks mmelflamel).

WELL, I would hesitate to call Berna Machiavellian anything. Self-preserving and ambitious, but as a ruler he was certainly not Machiavellian, he was under the influence of far too many people and far too uneducated about his own kingdom for that, in my opinion. XD

Well, here s also inusual to have booze on sale, but happened in Tottus supermarket. I saw it on Tv and i had to go to see if it really was that wonderful....and it waaas! <3

Favourite Napoleonic book? Be honest. Diary, novel, essay etc etc? :)

It may sound absurd but I haven't read many Napoleonic books. With nowadays expensive books, communist censorship and propaganda in the old ones and my preference for paperbacks there are not many choices left. I like " On war" by Clauzewitz. It's not strictly Napoleonic but it makes interesting comparisons including Frederick the Great and Napolenic wars. The Bulgarian edition I have read didn't include the whole text of the book. I have found it here and I realized that my copy has many passages missing so some charpers just lose their point if they are cut in a half... Why would you publish such thing? 

So I have yet to find my favourite Napoleonic book. First, I will see if it's "Desiree" ;) Thank you about it :D
