JANUARY in books
Read:
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black
Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me by Mariko Tamaki
I Want To Be Where the Normal People Are by Rachel Bloom
The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo
Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour
Heavy Vinyl: Y2K-O! by Carly Usdin
Die, Vol. 2: Split the Party by Kieron Gillen
My favorite of the bunch is probably Watch Over Me. Sorrow laps at you in waves, but it's terrific and refreshing to come up for air afterward.
The Empress of Salt and Fortune was really great! I'll probably get more out of it with a reread (which will def happen soon before I read the sequel).
I Want to be Where the Normal People are was my quickest read, in that I picked it up and barely put it down until I was done. The flow is really smooth, Rachel Bloom's voice as an author is strong and engaging, and idk it's lowkey inspiring to be mentally ill and hear someone talk about painful memories with the wall of it can’t stop me between the present and the past.
The rest of my reads fell anywhere from meh to fine.
Considering the last book I finished was two weeks ago, it could’ve been a better month for reading. But factoring in that I’ve had other things to do since, it hasn’t exactly been a bad month either! We’ll call it a win.
DNF:
Artemis by Andy Weir Just couldn't get into it. Or rather, the writing style bumped me out repeatedly. I think someday I might try again because the premise kinda slaps, but the idea of never picking it up again ain't really breaking my heart.
Well Played by Jen DeLuca Boring, so boring. Like the main does have some relatable moments in the 100ish pages I read, but overall nothing in the execution is enough to make me turn the next page.
I'm no stranger to putting books down, but usually it's because I get distracted with some other thing and forget to come back to it. I'm learning to put them down on purpose.
Currently Reading
The Night Circus + The Starless Sea, both by Erin Morgenstern
I'm buddy reading the latter, and while we're between chats (& since The Night Circus has been sitting on my shelf for at least three years), I'm filling the time with the former. It's really nice finding an author I enjoy this much! I haven't annotated in forever but The Starless Sea revived the inclination.
Ok maybe this game is peak whatever
