When we filled up on gas for the day, I splurged and bought a 99 cent coffee at the Holiday Gas Station in Grand Marais. After finishing bagels and cream cheese in the car, we were off. Today was a race against the rain, which was supposed to arrive early afternoon. We normally don’t set an alarm on our mini vacations, but today we woke up and hit Cascade River State Park pretty early. A short hike in gets visitors pretty close to the main falls, and the trail continues on to other pretty cool views. Hikes are normally short in distance, but stopping every few feet for GoPro videos or long exposures takes a lot of time. The cold was coming in and trees were past their peak colors for the fall season, so most places we stopped were pretty empty with other visitors, compared to the summer.
Stop two was Caribou Falls, a wayside stop off of the scenic road following Lake Superior. It’s a longer hike to get to the falls, but is a stop missed by the general population. It was new to me, and a welcomed site along a route I normally get stuck doing the same thing year after year. We brought along our box wine in a small backpack with GSI plastic wine glasses to enjoy at the bottom of the falls. Highly recommended. The rain had started off and on, but we got lucky and dodged most of it when we were on hikes.
Tettegouche State Park is one of my favorite spots to hit up north. Because of it’s popularity, there’s a lot of hikes, falls and rocks to explore in the huge park. The colors were still pretty decent for photos, and having the park close to ourselves makes it easier to get landscapes uninterrupted.
