and what was that entire Tobin storyline in the s1 finale? apparently it’s not something that happened in s2 so it’s just a completely abandoned storyline but WHAT WAS IT? he and the brogrammers seemed to be singing to Leif in a very intense fashion, and there seemed to be a serious conversation between them on the same day?!?

did Leif ever find out that it was Joan who wrote the peer review? Idk if it would affect him as much now, he’s over her and rightfully so, but would this change his view of his relationship with Zoey or maybe make him question the way he jumps to conclusions?

all we got of the Mo/Eddie breakup was a few angry one-sided phone calls, most likely bc they couldn’t get Patrick back due to covid, but why was it that they broke up?

did Ava and Joan ever reconcile after the promotion and quitting? they seemed great after 1x11, but apparently there was still some resentment there-I hope they end up okay

was goodnight my angel a potential song for later while the pilot was being written-“when we went sailing on an emerald bay”, etc?

my thoughts on the best episode of television I’ve ever seen

this reckoning was extraordinary indeed

let me start out by saying that I’m white, so my voice when it comes to the issues addressed in this episode doesn’t matter as much. as an awkward ginger girl who cares far too much, I’ve related to Zoey from the start, and I’m learning along with her what being an ally really means. my thoughts here are only written as appreciation for the episode

the world needs to see this episode. I’ve said since the beginning that the world needs to see this show, but that sentiment is now on a whole new level.

the writing for this episode was phenomenal-the best on the show for sure. standouts include the scene in Simon’s office (raw, truthful, masterfully delivered) and the scene with Tobin in Zoey’s office (a real look into his character that I’m so glad we have, vulnerable and heartwrenching and not-quite-surprising and so needed).

the songs were unbelievable. “no more drama” had me applauding my television as if I could be heard.

John Clarence Stewart deserves all the awards

Alex Newell deserves all the awards

Kapil Talwalkar deserves all the awards (I’m genuinely so glad to finally see him get to do stuff like this-he’s obviously an incredible comedian but this, Tobin truly letting his guard down fully for the first time, I cried and cried)

as always, Jane was incredible. Zoey’s well-meaning blunders are very, very real and do have harmful effects, and it’s so important for the huge part of the audience who relates to Zoey (myself included) to learn from her mistakes along with her

I’m very much looking forward to seeing where else they go with Tatiana

I absolutely love what they did with Leif this episode, I was a little afraid they’d make him casually racist but the virtue signaling and the trying-too-hard makes so much sense with his character and was definitely something I’ve related to and am learning to let go of

also that last scene with Leif and Tobin is my favorite of theirs so far, it felt so refreshing and I’m so excited to see more of their dynamic (also the bi flag sticker on the helmet is back and in full view WOOP)

I simply cannot say enough about John’s performance, I almost can’t put it into words

everyone shutting down DMD’s white savior moment was delicious to watch

speaking of, I’d like to say what I’ve always said about this show, in that it’s so important that every character is fully human with flaws and good points and there’s no one who’s only bad or only good-there’s no cut-and-dry “this person is the cause of racism and now that the episode’s over everything’s fine”, it’s real and it’s life and it’s the best television show on the planet

Max being back at sprqpoint was so fun to watch, epic marker-passing moment and all

I can’t wait to learn more about McKenzie

whoever played Amanda is a very good actress because I was seething

Leif’s line about the conch sent me right back to freshman english honors

Tobin’s bouquet of string cheese was a masterpiece (and I’m really looking forward to seeing more of his and Simon’s relationship)

the choreo this episode was just incredible

the staircase scene...wow wow wow wow all I can say is wow

I don’t remember exactly what Tobin’s three questions were but yes, they are all very important questions

the last scene was a breath of, like Simon said, relief. so needed and so beautiful

to sum it up. this episode is desperately needed. if I could make the entire world watch something for 45 minutes (translated into whatever language they spoke, etc, obviously) it would be this. season 2, episode 6.

I…don’t quite know how to feel

There was truly a lot of good to this episode, but some just felt…rushed? like, really rushed, which I get because they don’t have enough time but. still

Zimon had a lot more to be developed; the way they broke up wasn’t terrible and I love where Simon ended up as a character but I really wish they had more time and I really wish she could have told him about her powers

Rose deserves the world, I am so in love with her

I Lived was far and away the best part of the episode, tied with the Simon/Leif/DMD storyline with Mo and Perry and MacTobin not far behind

The first segment held so much pain (save for “make it simple to last your whole life long” which made me explode into 😍💞🥰💕 before going back to the pain) which made shake it off all the better because it felt needed both for the characters and the audience; it was so fun and the vocals were flawless as always

SPEAKING of vocals. can we TALK about DAVID AND ALEX?!?!?! phenomenal, just phenomenal-and I’m obsessed with the staging of that number

that isolation pod has seen a lot of things (also where was Leif in that montage)

speaking of Leif, I absolutely love his development in this ep and his scene with Simon-I love that Simon’s finding his passion and that they didn’t fully drop the antiracism storyline

a lot of it did still feel rushed somehow, though, which again I get because network television but stilllllllll

Mo’s line to the effect of “you have kids, I have her” was perfection (although this episode showed me the one of only two times in my life I disagreed with him, the other being “choosing happiness”-as much of a hopeless romantic as I am, I don’t exactly condone rushing to an airport to break up a couple and I wasn’t a fan of “stick drugs in Rose’s suitcase”)

Rose. Deserves. Better. At least to see that breakup, to see where the show left her, because so many of these side characters deserve so much more than being obstacles to the love triangle (on that note, justice for Tatiana, Autumn, and Jessica)

I thought for a bit that David would go full Hamlet on us

It was really neat to see that more vulnerable side of Mackenzie

Emily and Maggie’s scene together was unexpected and lovely

I’m honestly so interested in the fact that DMD came on as a comedic side character and was actually given a season of genuine development and growth (and I loved his candle moment)

Jane Levy is truly such a phenomenal actress and, rushed as it may have been, this ep was such a good showcase for that-in someone else’s hands the character could have been so unlikable but her awkwardness and vulnerability and genuine love for those around her and the way every thought showed on her face-I admire this woman with my entire soul

I relate to Zoey deeper and deeper every day; I can barely imagine the self-doubt she must have felt at the reveal and that scene with her and Max was masterfully acted

melt with you has meant a lot to me for quite a while (especially due to ftr brat pack and its being the representation of everything I want to do as a theatre actress) and Jane did it beautifully but holy crap idek how to feel about that last scene

I Lived and that entire scene was the reminder that this show is truly unlike any other; when the orchestra came in the lump in my throat really started to grow, and the choreo, and the looks on their faces, and the dialogue-I can barely describe the feeling in words

there’s a lot of possibility for interesting storylines in s3 and more genuine growth and consciousness in the story they’re telling; these characters are flawed and real and human and I hope with everything in me that every one of them finds fulfillment. this show is what I’ve knit my soul to for the past year and a half, and I’d still give anything to be part of it. may this beautiful story continue to grow along with all of those beautiful people who make it happen

I absolutely love the Deb development; Bernadette Peters is once again and always phenomenal

Maggie’s storyline rn is so interesting to me

I just really love the development of that relationship (oh what I’d give to go on a cruise with those two)

the little pronouns exchange was so lovely and so important

all of the acting in this was just unbelievable. so vulnerable and real and ahhhhh

okay this episode had a lot of serious themes but I just have to get this out: MACTOBIN MACTOBIN MACTOBIN MACTOBIN MACTOBIN MACTOBIN

THE MEDITATION ROOM GIVES US A FANTASTIC SCENE ONCE AGAIN. I WILL BE SCREAMING ABOUT THIS AS LONG AS I LIVE

can we talk about that letter opener line bc-oh my god it’s perfection

they’re genuinely so good together and I hope they end up okay-there are a few lines hinting at Tobin’s insecurity that it might just be an “angry hookup” or bc they kissed after he said he hated Leif that might factor into it but. hopefully they can all be good with each other, I just love them a lot

and the scene with him and Leif was just pure joy and I missed seeing them so much-they’re such good friends and they care so much about each other and ahhhhhh

THE JUMPING UP AND DOWN

also it’s fascinating to see a return to “We’re Gonna Freakin Do This, I’m Very Sure That This Office Will One Day Be Mine” Leif

was the shot with his legs on the table a callback to ipasoy or am I just overthinking this bc we’ve barely seen him for the past few episodes? who knows, anyway, he’s a fascinating character and I love him so much

okay time to Get Into The Drama

first order of business: Alex Newell and David St. Louis deserve every single award ever made

that storyline destroyed me and it’s so nuanced and real and my GOD this show

also?!?! unwell?!?! sir how do you do that

now the elephant in the room: Zoey, ma’am, I love you more than life itself but idk how you’re gonna get out of this one

my show choir did New York State Of Mind a few months before the pandemic hit and that song has meant everything to me since then; Skylar’s rendition was incredible

I am so nervous about the implications for...every single relationship

Jane Levy is the queen of acting

SHE IS STATIC ELECTRICITY!!!

I really hope the gambling thing doesn’t become a real addiction; it’s good that it worked out (and rich girl was such a vibe, my friend and I are dying to recreate it)

Mackenzie’s outfit was once again off the charts

I feel so much for Mo; that relationship seemed so real and I can’t imagine being told that being your truest self is causing your partner pain

okay speaking of tears WE GET MITCH NEXT WEEK?!? HEALTHY, UP-AND-RUNNING, WONDERFUL AND SUPPORTIVE MITCH? I’M GONNA S O B

first things first, the tv I was watching on glitched and was out of sync until the let’s get loud key change (poetic) so I’ll be rewatching soon

ok so yep I’m crying

give a little bit was my parents’ wedding song and a huge part of my childhood; the car scene had me in tears simply because of how much I feel like I’m meant to be part of this show and how desperately I want to be part of that family

truly the most beautiful group of people in the world in every way

okay General Episode Thoughts

the songs were immaculate. Drift Away was the vibiest of vibes, Tainted Love absolutely blew me away, Watermelon Sugar had my friend and I jamming on the couch, Let’s Get Loud was a bop from the start (and let’s give it up for that key change)

I am LIVING for David as a pianist and a father and the way he stood up for himself

Mo’s outfits this ep were impeccable as always

sometimes I almost forget how much I love Simon Haynes and then I remember...a lot. it’s a lot. I love him so much

Zoey’s arc this ep was incredible and the most relatable thing on the show yet for me-the desperation to recreate memories and have everything just as it has to be to foster an emotion, to feel like you don’t want to be a burden on your friends, to long for those cherished moments of community (yknow like STARGAZING WITH THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE AS GIVE A LITTLE BIT PLAYS IN THE BACKGROUND)

my heart broke for Leif this whole episode-at the beginning I thought his insecurity was the root of his story this ep and I was fully prepared to love Kaia but I’m about ready to fight her at this point, Leif’s genuinely such a wonderful person and deserves to be loved for who he is

his dynamic with Zoey this ep was fascinating as always

I’m living for Tobin’s apparent crush on Mackenzie

“I tried to drown myself once” and the following awkward silence...mood

this show is so incredibly human

I already love Rose so much oh my god-her vibes are off the charts

everyone in this show is so gosh darn pretty

BROS WHO THROW

Perry is already such an interesting character, I can’t wait to see more of his arc

the tiki torches joke is fantastic

Aiden with baby Miles!!!! I hope we get more content of him being The Cool Not-Actually-Related Uncle™️

for all the times I’ve heard someone you loved on the radio, this is the first time it’s actually been done with diction and I’ve actually deciphered the lyrics-thanks Mary

Jenna is adorable and I love her-the scene when she’s helping Maggie in the greenhouse made me smile so much my face hurt

I already like Roger

That teal coat Mo was wearing-I need it

all the outfits this ep were on point-Zoey’s shirts, Simon’s pocket squares, all of it

Max had quite a few rough bits this episode, but at least he’s becoming aware of it-I was RELIEVED to see him having an Actual Mature Conversation with Zoey, and I hope things will get better

also say something was a masterclass in acting a song

this bullet point is simply to say that I Love Simon Haynes Very Much

hard knock life was an absolute bop; I love what they did with the instrumentals, the choreo was iconic, I loved the expressions on their faces the whole time
