Jefferson City, MO (Cole County) Missouri State Capitol Building is a pure but late example of Classic Revival architecture. Plan is symmetrical, two wings for legislative houses flanking large central rotunda. Building has four stories and basement, covers approximately three acres, and has nearly 500,000 square feet of floor space. Carthage, Missouri limestone marble used for exterior walls, corridor floors, rotundas and stairways. Exterior ornament includes pedimental and frieze sculpture, executed in an ornate, formal and well proportioned style. The Capitol Building and grounds are situated on top of a bluff fronting on the Missouri River in central Jefferson City. Symmetrical terraces descend from the Capitol Building on its river side. Area surrounding the building is formally landscaped and includes driveways and esplanade encircling the building; trees, flowers and shrubbery arrangements, ornate iron lamp posts and monumental sculpture.
