Yesterday, I had the pleasure of going to Winston-Salem with fellow intern Tyler Law, WCUFAM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Laura Minton, and WCU Director Denise Drury Homewood. We visited the Reynolda House, both a historic location and museum housing American art, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), and finally the Museum of Anthropology at Wake Forest University. It was a nostalgic trip for Laura, as she completed her undergrad at Wake Forest, as well as her first internship at the Reynolda house. For Tyler and I, it was a trip full of firsts, and lasts (maybe?). SECCA is currently holding an exhibition entitled “20 Years of Art-O-Mats, Ker-Plunking since 1997,” and we were fortunate enough to get one of the tiny, original art pieces, held in vintage cigarette dispensers. Be warned, once you’ve gotten your first original work of art from an Art-O-Mat, you won’t want to stop collecting them. As interns, this trip was an opportunity to learn all about the museum world, in contexts outside of WCUFAM, of which we’ve both become very familiar. The trip also marked then end of our internships – our last day is Friday. I feel so fortunate to have learned everything I have with such great people, and though I’m sad this will be my last post as an intern here, I’m hopeful I’ll continue gaining experience with the WCUFAM in my final two semesters at WCU. Don’t forget to click on the links in the pictures to learn more about SECCA, and the links below to learn more about the Reynolda House and the Museum of Anthropology at WFU.
Thanks for a great summer!
