Making Formatted Mobile Replies!

Hello!! Okay so I know there's a lot of people who get stuck on mobile because their computer breaks (aka me) or are on vacation. SO I give you my tutorial on how to do formatted replies and thoroughly convince everyone you are a god. It's a little long, but very detailed and step by step.

First, you need a smartphone. No brainer but, I'm going super detailed. I have an iPhone 6s, but the basic perimeters are the same even if you have an android.

Alright! Let's just get started.

You want to use your browser. This is important. Yes, you can use the app, but I find the app acts weird when coming to reading what's html text and what's not even when it's switched to the html setting. So do yourself a favor and use your browser (safari, chrome, or whatever other internet thing you use).

Log in. Find the reply you want on your dash. My phone doesn't let me copy and paste on people's blogs so I have to copy from the dash, but you might find that different. basically you just need to highlight and copy the last persons reply as shown below.

I write my replies in my notes because I find it easier. You can write them directly into a post if you wish. Pressing the reblog button will bring you to a page like this. You want this page regardless of where you type. Press it. You will get this page.

Go to your notes and write your reply below the other person’s.

Now, once you've written your reply, it's time for all the fun formatting!!

First place <p> at the beginning of every paragraph (including your partner's reply! If you like small text, insert <small> after the <p> of every paragraph as well.

Basic codes for text formatting are <b>text</b> for bold, <i>text</i> for italic, and <strike>text</strike> for a strike through. You can look up other basic html formats here.

Now you have to insert the link that takes you back to the last persons reply. To get the url for the last reply, press and hold the link and press copy (or copy link or copy link location, whatever comes up).

The code looks like this and it goes at the very very top of all the text.

Next, select all and copy all the text you’ve written from your notes into the body of the reply page.

Now you need to insert the icons/gif.

The code for images looks like this:

<p><img src="IMAGE LINK HERE">

If you put the code proceeding the other person’s text, the image will appear before their reply an vice versa. To get the link for the past person's icon, you just press and hold over the image and hit copy.

It's a similar process to insert the icon/gif for your reply. Open your gif hunt in a new tab. Press and copy the url for the icon/gif you want.

place the code <p><img src="URL HERE"> before or after you reply depending on where you want your icon/gif.

Last coding thing you have to do is insert the blockquote line.

Place <blockquote> DIRECTLY after the <p><a href="LINK">url</a> code.

You place </blockquote> after the last persons reply. Be sure to include the code for their icon/gif between <blockquote> and </blockquote>.

Congrats you're done with coding!

Press the red x to get rid of the past replies.

Now, scroll down and hit the little down arrow. Insert the tags you want, and switch the "publish now" to "save as draft."

You don't have to save as draft and publish your post now, but I like to see how the formatting come out and make sure I didn't make any stupid mistakes.

Once you've saved the post as a draft, go look at it in your drafts.

If it doesn't look right, press the edit button. Some common mistakes would be not placing the entire person's reply between the <blockquote></blockquote> code and forgetting a "<" or "/". Don't be discouraged!

Note that italics don't show up on browsers. They do show up in the app, so if you're really worried about your italics you can look at it on the tumblr app.

Once everything looks awesome and like you want, switch "save as draft" to "publish now." Press save and congrats!! You're all done.

I know this seems like a lot, but once you do it a couple times it gets much easier!! Yes, it will take more time than if you were on your computer (esp. if you have edible reblogs installed), but I promise it's not impossible!!

How to roleplay on the mobile Tumblr app

This is a problem most of us will have to face one day. So here, I will show you how I roleplay through the Tumblr app when I’m mobile. Fair warning, the result might not be as aesthetically pleasing as doing in on your computer.

I am not the best at explaining so message me if you have any questions, but I will try to make it as clear as possible and use screencaps to make it clearer.

Step 1 - Find your reply

This is fairly simple, and probably does not need any further explanations. Just find the thread you want to reply to, and hit that reblog button.

Step 2 - Go into html

This is an important step in order to edit your reply however you want, and use a gif/gif icon/static icon. To do so, you will need to click on the gear icon in the top right corner, just under the Post button. It will redirect you to an options page. Scroll down to the Editor section and click on HTML. Once you’re done this step, you may go back to your post by clicking on the <Reblog button on the top left corner.

Step 3 - Typing your reply and editing it

You may now type your reply, with no HTML coding yet, just like you would do on your laptop. But you will want to add a gif/gif icon/static icon. For that, you will need to open the browser app, and find which gif/gif icon/static icon you ant to use. Once you have it, press and hold it to get the Save Image and Copy options. Since you need the URL link of the picture, click on copy.

Once you have your image’s URL, you will want to add it to your reply. For that, you need to use the <img src=“link”> code, and place it at the end or at the beginning or the reply, depending on your preference.

Once this is done, you may also edit your text to make it look the way you want it. In this case, I only want small text, so I will use the <small> tag. For a list of different HTML tags, you can look here.

You may also want to tag your reply. You can use your usual tags, but I also suggest using the tag section to mention to your partner that you are mobile.

Step 4 - Cutting your thread (optional)

To my knowledge, there currently isn’t a way to only cut your previous reply, and keep only your partner’s, on the mobile app. For this reason, I will leave this optional, since your partner can cut the thread if they are mobile. If you do wish to have your reply short and not clog the dash, you can click on the red ‘x’ at the top of the reblog post. Warning: it will delete the whole box, including your partner’s reply. The result will only leave the reply you just typed.

It does occasionally happen that the mobile app has a glitch, and it gives you the HTML of the thread instead of a reply box. It hasn’t happened to me in a while, but if it does, I will be sure to make another tutorial for this glitch, as it lets you cut posts in a similar way as you would on a computer.

Roleplaying on mobile is a pain in the ass, I know, but it can be a lot easier on your partners if you know how to do it properly. So here is a quick little guide on how to roleplay while you’re on your phone, including using gifs.

First thing’s first, no tumblr app. You’re going to have to use your phone’s browser, whether it’s Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or anything else. Doesn’t matter. Next you’ll need to know basic HTML. Don’t worry, nothing too fancy.

<p> = New line

<blockquote> = Blockquote

<b> = Bold

<strong> = Bold

<em> = Italic 

<strike> = Strikethrough

<small> = Small text

</blockquote> = End blockquote

</b> = End bold

</strong> = End bold

</em> = End italic

</strike> = End strikethrough

</small> = End small text

Now that you know the basics, you’re on your way! Now this is a screencap of HTML on my laptop but it won’t be any different on your phone.

So first we have our blog links up there, both of those are mine but in a reply it would be yours and your partner’s. After that you have your blockquote starting with a new line and the first reply. Next to your reply you’ve have your image. That’s basically everything from <figure data-orig-height to .gif”>. After you’ve got the next reply in a similar format. 

So now that we’ve got what is what figured out, we’ll move onto how to get rid of the older reply since we don’t want that. We’re going to delete everything from the <p> after your first URL to the </blockquote> before your second reply. So it’ll look like this.

Now I’m sure you’ve noticed that now we’re missing a blockquote so after the first URL we’re going to add another <blockquote>. Now you won’t always need to add one, but make sure you pay attention to whether or not you do. This is what your HTML should look like now.

This is your partner’s reply so now we get to add yours. Basically add in your reply after everything so we can get to your image.

After you’ve written in your reply, you want to paste in this

Now you just need to go into a gif hunt and copy an image location and put it in.

EXTRA TIPS AND TRICKS:

If you’ve got a large post that has been turned into a link, the URL will look like this

https://www.tumblr.com/reblog/115541191924/ttYVl7nS?redirect_to=%2Fdashboard You’ll want to remove everything past the question mark so it looks like this.

https://www.tumblr.com/reblog/115541191924/ttYVl7nS After that, you just add /text on the end so it becomes https://www.tumblr.com/reblog/115541191924/ttYVl7nS/text

Put gifs in your drafts

I love to just put gifs in my drafts because it tends to save me a lot of time since you can just copy HTML from there.

Practice

Before going and trying to do this straight away on mobile, because you’ll get frustrated, practice. Try doing your replies on the HTML setting on your computer to get the hang of it. With that you can preview your posts and see if you have mistakes before posting anything. You’ll be able to figure out where you went wrong and be less likely to make those mistakes in the future.
