My Phone Was "Broken" — Until I Actually Checked What Was Wrong
I'll be honest. When my phone started acting up last winter, my first instinct was to just grab a new one.
The screen would flicker randomly. The battery barely made it to noon. I figured it was just old and done. But a friend talked me out of rushing to the store and suggested I at least find out what was actually failing before spending money.

The Problem with Guessing
Most of us treat our devices the way we treat a car making a weird noise — we either panic or ignore it. Neither one helps.

A Few Things to Check Before Any Repair
After that experience, I started doing a few basic checks myself before taking anything in:
Check battery health first. iPhones have it built into Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Many Android phones include it under Device Care. If your battery is at 78% capacity or lower, that's often the culprit behind most daily frustrations.
Boot into Safe Mode. On Android, this temporarily disables all third-party apps. If the phone runs normally in that mode, a downloaded app is your problem — not the hardware.
Clear your storage. A phone that's 95% full will behave like it's broken. It's not. It just needs breathing room.
Look for physical clues. Check your SIM tray for water damage indicators and inspect ports for lint. Sometimes a toothpick solves what looks like a "charging problem."
It's Not About Being a Tech Person
You don't need to be technical to do any of this. It's just about being a little more deliberate before handing over your device or your money.
New Jersey has plenty of repair options, and that's great. But knowing what's actually wrong means you can ask smarter questions, compare quotes with confidence, and avoid paying to replace parts that didn't need replacing.
