On Thursday morning, we received a call from Big Life Foundation rangers who found the bull suffering from three spear wounds. We immediately rallied our teams and flew KWS veterinarian Dr. Poghon, from the DSWT-funded Tsavo Mobile Veterinary Unit, to the scene. It was a total group effort to dart and treat the old giant, and Big Life will continue to monitor his recovery. #DSWTfieldsuccessstories • Tolstoy’s injuries are likely the result of human-wildlife conflict. Elephants do not distinguish farm land from forest, and given the dry conditions and ever-encroaching human settlements, there is an increased chance of elephants coming into contact with farmers, who understandably wish to protect their crops.
