The truth is in the statistics! Humans go in the water 8 billion times a year and from that 85 people are mistakenly bitten by a shark and less that 5 on average die from these mistakes...that are most commonly referred to as shark attacks. If even 1 of over 500 species of sharks preyed on man, we would not be able to swim in the ocean at all! Here is a comparison of some of the more dangerous animals in the US, of course saving the best for last! Dogs bite someone every 40 seconds resulting in 4 to 5 million bites and 16 to 20 deaths yearly. Cows kill 20 people yearly. Deer kill an average of 135 people yearly. 1600 people are attacked and bitten every single year in the state of New York by People! Humans are responsible for killing between 73 million to 250 million sharks every year mostly for just their fins! Let's end this needless slaughter and save our friends in the sea! ❄️Happy December!🌊⁣⁣ from @pnwprotectors With the sun setting on another month, it's time for a check-in on Southern Resident Orcas and Bigg's/Transient Orca visits to the Salish Sea throughout the month of November. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The Southern Resident Orcas were present in November more than any other month this year, and it was also the first month of the year where they were present more days than Bigg's Transient Orcas. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The Southern Resident Orcas spent 15 of the 21 days present within the waters of the Puget Sound. In a historical undertaking, a consortium of the world's leading experts from @leibnizizw Avantea, @safariparkdvurkralove and @kenyawildlifeservice performed the first ever ovum pick up on Fatu and Najin, the last living northern white rhino on the planet at @olpejeta conservancy in northern Kenya. This procedure, never before performed on any northern white rhinos, could mark that instant when these creatures were brought back from certain extinction. At this very moment, the precious ova are being rushed to Italy where they will eventually be matured and fertilized with frozen northern white rhino sperm to become embryos which could then be transferred into the southern white rhinos who could gestate the embryos. If this new technology is successful, it could bring this critically endangered species BACK FROM EXTINCTION. This has been a ten year journey, sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes sublime as I followed the last northern white rhinos alive on the planet from @safariparkdvurkralove in the Czech Republic to Kenya's @olpejeta back in 2009. Witnessing what was believed to be end of the species with the death of Sudan, the very last male northern white rhino, last year broke my heart into a million pieces. Now, I share the news that these incredible human beings are on the cusp of saving the species. Playing tug-o-war with cod frames, these Northern Buller's albatross are demonstrating why fisheries pose such a threat to scavenging seabirds. Baited hooks are irresistible to these birds, and fish discards tossed overboard can put them in harms way. There are guidelines and regulations to minimise seabird by-catch by weighting lines, scaring birds with streamers, or setting lines at night. But here in New Zealand our fisheries are poorly observed, and yet another article has just surfaced documenting the deaths of endangered Antipodean albatross in long-line fisheries.
