Soleil swapping with Peri?

They actually haven’t been open since we’ve started, so you really haven’t missed any openings! When we started there was like 50 requests (which is why it’s been closed) but now there’s about 15 so it shouldn’t be too long now

do you have any tips on doing palette swaps? I can never get the colour to the right shade when I try.

Nas here! I don’t know what program you use for editing, but I use Paint Tool Sai since it’s free (I think?) and relatively simple, and I can give you a basic breakdown of my process:

For this example, I’ll be using Fir’s Hero portrait!

First, I would use the “Select” tool to select the area you want to edit. I chose the hair

Then, go to “Filter,” and select “Brightness and Contrast.” Move the “Color Deepen” slider all the way to the far left, and this should turn the selected area gray.

Make a second layer, and set it to “Overlay,” like so. This will allow us to color over the gray part while still keeping texture.

Pick a color, and just, yknow, color over the selected area.

It should look like this:

If you still want to make slight, or even dramatic changes to the shade or intensity, you can go back to Brightness and Contrast. NOTE: Since the hair is now deselected at this point, moving the slider will affect the entire layer rather that just the hair. This is why it is recommended to make a new layer for each area you intend to recolor.

“Brightness” adjusts, well, brightness. i.e how light it looks

You can also use “Color Deepen” to adjust how intense/saturated the color is. Moving the slider to the right adds more of that color, the left desaturates the layer.

You can also go to “Hue and Saturation” which is also under “Filter.” This can be used to change the base color. Here, it is changed from red to brown

It works the opposite way as well

“Saturation” works basically the same way as “Color Deepen.” “Luminescence” is similar to “Brightness” to my knowledge, but I couldn’t really tell you the difference  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Probably how much “glow” the layer has?

If you’re attempting to recolor lighter areas, such as pale skin or white clothes, the overlay method doesn’t really work that well. In this case, you can make another layer, set it to “Multiply,” and color over the desired area. This will also keep close to the intended color and also keep the texture of the base layer. You can also use the “Filter” options here to, if you’d like to adjust the color. Don’t be afraid to experiment with it!
