Okay, so I'm very new to this fandom and I am sooooo interested, but I would like to know a bit more info. I know that there isn't really a set way that this fandom works, but I would like to know this: who makes up the factions (Kirin's Court, the Garbage Court, The Lalnae, etc), and what purpose do they serve, just stuff like that
Well, that’s a bit hard to answer because it differs from story to story depending on the creators. There is no one answer. For instance, there are some stories where Trott and Smith were members of Kirin’s court before breaking away to found the Garbage Court. In others, they never belonged to Kirin’s community.
But perhaps we can talk a bit about purposes. We recommend reading about the classic fae courts of fairy tales. The courts exist to put some controls on the fae of a given region. (It might help to think of them as corporations or city states)
The courts in the magical city of UMY seem to mostly be involved in balancing each other out, controlling the magical traffic of the city. You have big formal heavy powers like Kirin, the (most often characterized as neutral) communion of witches, the chaotic underdogs like the Garbage Court. Those are common characterizations we see.
With everything in UMY, it is up to each creator to decide what headcanons and ideas they want to use. Want to write Kirin as a benevolent fae lord shepherding the city and befriending powerful witches? There are people out there who will be interested. Want to write Kirin as a bloodthirsty monster? There are people for that too.
What this mod suggests is building up ideas you want to see. We encourage you to post in the tag - maybe throw an idea out there and encourage people to talk to you about it! We enjoy reblogging headcanons and encouraging participation.
