Based? Based on what?
Here is the work from last week, which was the second week of modeling. This week was scheduled to be the week focusing on props for the writing desk, but many of the props from last week are ones that will be used in the Writing Desk AoI as well as the Dining Table AoI, this allowed me to get started on some props from other locations.
Included are:
The new sconce/ lantern.
An ink blotter, a small device with a piece of paper wrapped around the curved edge to absorb excess ink from letters.
A wax seal stamp, the base will have a design carved into the underside that can be used to press sealing wax onto letters.
The sword and stand are props from the Fireplace Mantel AoI. This sword was owned by the characters father and was given to them when their father died in battle, which is also where the sword was broken. It will have a place of honor above the fireplace.
The back work for this week was new models for the floor and roof boards. Textures alone weren’t cutting it to show the level of detail and the critiques that I received were that there should be more detail in the model itself, including the ridges between boards.
Here is the work from last week, which was the first week of modeling for this semester. I’ve modeled the new props for the dining table area of interest.
Included are:
Several pieces of paper: flat, folded, and rolled. Each of those groups has a three versions with more or less creases and folds. These models will each get a couple textures to add to the variations.
A pen knife: used to sharpen pencils and quills, as well as open letters.
Two journals: The models are two versions of the sames style journal, there will be a few different textures for these models as well to show age and use.
Candle holder: Made of wood and metal.
Compass: The curved shape will be glass and the face with directions will be done through textures.
The back work for this week was new models and textures for the interior walls and the two doors. I broke up the wall with boards and added more detail to the doors themselves.
There was no post for 10/22 due to Thesis Presentations, but work still continued. Here are the models that were made over that time. The focus has been on the smaller props that will fill in the scenes.
In addition to the props that I did concept art for several weeks ago I have created a few new ones. I received some critique after my presentation that pointed out to me that up to this point I have been modeling things out of necessity and not entirely for their story value. I was told to find objects and keepsakes that my character would have in their home too as that is what really tells us who they are.
Because of this idea I have a few new props, moving left to right in the image above:
There’s a war banner that I plan to take a second pass at this week, it will have fire damage and be dirty. It will have the insignia of the war battalion the character fought in.
There’s an arrow with a broken shaft that has been put back together. Its rather old, and the stand its on may have a plaque that alludes to the fact that the character keeps it because it nearly killed him.
There’s a WIP wolf skull (still working on the teeth). This skull is an important reminder to the character as it wasn’t just a wolf, it was a werewolf that bit the character, who still has the scar on his arm.
Along with these new more story driven props are the ones that I did the art for, a goblet, a mug, a new take on a handheld candle holder, an inkwell, a leather bound book, and finally an octagonal plate.
This week is the final week dedicated solely to modeling, and on November 4th I will start texturing the objects, starting with the cabin itself. I think at this point I may continue to model objects even after this week however and just add that to the texturing work I’m doing.
As I mentioned above Presentations were last week so I will also post a few images from my slides that I realize will help anyone viewing this blog, like character art and a basic description of who he is that way people will have a better understanding of where my design decisions are coming from. I will also be putting an updated timeline up, though it is still subject to change as the semester continues.
Here is the work from last week, the second week of modeling. That week was focused on getting the larger scale props modeled and in the scene for scale references.
I’ve included a few renders of the furniture in the cabin to show off the scene as a whole. Along with these shots is a wire frame version to give a quick idea of what the edge flow is looking like for these pieces.
This week I will be continuing the modeling phase. Moving on to creating and populating the scene with the smaller scale props that I did concept art for a few weeks ago. I will also be taking some time to create a few scene mock ups to get an idea of composition and story for my final rendered deliverables.
Here is the work from last week, which was the first week of modeling, a model for the cabin itself.
I’ve included a few full view renders and wire frames and then a couple interior shots from the ground floor with wire frames.
I think the model is in a good place and I’m comfortable moving on to my next task, but I’m sure that I’ll be coming back to this one pretty much until the texturing starts. I’m still deciding how best to handle the fireplace, but I’ll put in more work with it this week.
This week I will be continuing the modeling phase. I will be adjusting my schedule to better reflect how I plan to accomplish the tasks. At this point I no longer believe that breaking it down by areas is the best way to handle it, instead I’ll break it down by asset size. This week will be larger props and over the next few weeks (pretty much the entire month of October) I’ll work my way down in prop size, just layering in detail.
