Magic: the Gathering - Choices
. . . . OR perhaps going full Bant on Modern Merfolk ?
The sound of silence
Hello darkness my old friend. I’ve come to talk with you again. Because a vision softly creeping Unlike your insane price tag Here I am still weeping A playset still about $400
Draw, Clique, Go- Why Do We Do It?
Vendillion Clique is a heck of a Magic card. It’s an efficiently costed, flying threat with a built-in hand disruption ability. It’s an ideal tempo play forBlue decks, providing a clock and disruption on the same card without sacrificing the flexibility of an instant. However, this is mitigated by the sheer prevalance of a simple, tiny misplay- casting it to interfere with your opponent’s draw step.
If you were to ask an experienced Magic player when the best time to cast an instant is, in general, I can guarantee you, the response would be “as late as you can.” Vendillion Clique is no exception- by default, it is best when cast on your opponent’s end step. There are 3 reasons for this- first, it allows you flexibility. When you hold your Vendillion Clique until your end step, you have the option of holding up your mana for other responses to your opponent’s spells. These can include countermagic, removal, or card draw to find the previous. Secondly, a Clique on the end step allows opponents to spend their mana first. Allowing them to take themselves off of Abrubt Decay or Fatal Push mana before casting your Clique affords you much more information than what you otherwise would have had- making what to take a matter of choosing what they can use to kill your Clique. Finally, it puts the most time between the card your opponent draws from Clique and their untap step and main phase. This is relevant against decks that operate mainly during their main phase, such as Death’s Shadow, Bant Eldrazi, and Affinity. To put it quickly, a Clique on their end step may just draw them a land they can’t play yet, or a Liliana of the Veil they have to wait to cast, or even a Kolaghan’s Command they didn’t leave mana to cast. This way, you go a much longer way to getting a real tempo advantage with your Clique. Now, please don’t mistake my intention- Clique on draw step will, sometimes, be the correct line. Perhaps you don’t have an answer to a Tarmogoyf, and need to make sure your opponent doesn’t cast one. Perhaps you need a creature to protect a Spell Queller with a vital spell from an edict effect. Regardless, situations *will* come up where Clique during draw is right. However, I urge those of you tapping Islands in modern to strongly reconsider that stop set in the draw step of your opponent’s turn, and ask yourself- can I Clique later?
Sram, Senior Edificer will probably bring back the Cheerios Modern deck. Adds to the Puresteel Paladin draw effect, and you'll get a paladin for the 0-equip quick enough. Anyone else have some thoughts on this?

Pulling apart my modern deck :(
Rotation is right around the corner. This means all of our favorites from Khans of Tarkir and Fate Reforged are rotating out of standard. Don't franticly try to flip these cards, for the damage to their prices has already been done. Instead, this is an opportunity. An opportunity to play POSTMODERN FORMAT. Postmodern is a hypothetical non-rotating constructed format like Modern, however only sets printed M15 and newer are legal. Sure, until Shadows Over Innistrad comes out, this format is just what is in Standard plus M15, which might not sound like enough of a change to warrant its own format, but come Rotation, players will be able to continue to use their cards from M15, Khans, and Fate Reforged alongside whatever goodies get printed in Shadows Over Innistrad. If Modern's eldrazi takeover has you sad, or if you just can't bring yourself to part with Seige Rhino, Postmodern format will be the perfect choice. And just think of it, while everyone you know is shedding their rotating cards, you can pick them up fire-sale style for Postmodern. Sure the khans fetches are going to hold value, but imagine how easy picking up those mantis riders, soulfire grandmasters, and Sorins is going to be when they aren't standard legal anymore. This my friends is the affordable non-rotating format we deserve. So the next time you are playing on untap.in and you see slots open for Postmodern Format, throw something together! You might just have some fun with it!
