Seven lady saintes by Erica Van Horn is a contemporary illuminated manuscript chronicling the tragic lives and ends of seven women saints. Created in 1985 during a residency at the Women’s Studio Workshop, the silk screened accordion fold book is stored in a plastic and string enclosure. It’s a fascinating piece to behold with a modern take on illumination and with its haunting accounts of the tragic tales of Saints Martha, Agatha, Fina, Reparata, Lucy, Ursula, and Cecilia, whose stories are not often recounted. Through this artists’ book, the martyrs are remembered and rendered by a female artist centuries later. 90 copies of this work were produced.
