“Modern Plastics” On View at Metro Gallery 250, February 2019
Did it all start with a sea turtle and a plastic straw? That video went viral, and suddenly stainless steel straw options were everywhere (even at Metropolitan Bakery Rittenhouse). Plastic is unavoidable in the food service industry, especially in our current society where take-out is king. So it got us brainstorming; how can we cut-back on our use of plastic without inconveniencing our customers? That’s where you come in.
With the opening of “Modern Plastics”, we at Metropolitan Bakery are using this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to sustainability and announce our call to action. As plastic straws and bags soon disappear from our inventory, what would you, our customers and community, like to see us provide instead? Leave your comments below -- send us a message at [email protected] -- or DM us @metropolitanbakery or @metrogallery250 on Instagram.
“Metropolitan Museum of Art: Modern Plastics” explores the idea that perhaps, just for a moment, the value of plastic might lay in its gross longevity and is worth consideration like a fine pelt. Local artists Gabrielle Constantine, Sarah Grisham, Sarah Moore, and Christine McDonald want you to consider “Modern Plastics” like a sad dystopian museum gift shop -- because plastic will surely kill us off if we continue producing without reusing.
“Metropolitan Museum of Art: Modern Plastics” opens at Metropolitan Gallery 250 on February 1st with a reception from 6-9pm. Light bites courtesy of Metropolitan Bakery and draft beer sponsored by Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company. All are welcome.
Ps. Shout-out to Robb Lim for making this show happen!
