Modern Swimming pool design incorporates many different elements to deliver a more enticing and aesthetically pleasing experience over the traditional swimming pool designs of the 1950s and 1960s. Since the first gunite swimming pool was built in 1940, the new swimming pool construction business has evolved into a $32 billion per year global industry. Along with the improvements in the speed for new pool construction, many other aspects of pool design have evolved as well.
When it comes to the approach in design for modern swimming pools, there are two primary types of modern swimming pool design:
Naturalistic: A pool design inspired and influenced by natural surroundings and landscape features. Natural design pools often use freeform shapes, rock gardens, waterfalls, beach type pool entry, and themed landscaping (i.e., tropical, desert, beach, etc.) to create mood and aesthetics. The naturalistic design approach represents a continuation of the surrounding landscape with the pool area.
Architectural: A pool design inspired by structure architecture and design. Rigid lines, angles, and geometric shapes that complement the surrounding architecture without competing with it or appearing out of place. Architectural pool designs appear as part of the original property design rather than as a standalone feature. The ultimate goal is to create a pool area that appears to be designed and built along with the property structure(s). One major goal for this type of pool design is visualizing it as a continuation of the architectural design.
With both types of modern swimming pool designs, the pool area compliments the property. The naturalistic approach focuses on the area’s landscape or theme and serves as a guide to the swimming pool design. The architectural design complements the surrounding building structure(s) and utilizes the critical design elements to guide the pool design.
Modern Swimming Pool Design Features
Now that we’ve clarified the primary styling aspects of modern pool design, we will now discuss some of the design features of a modern swimming pool:
Infinity edge design – Water continually flows over the pool edge creating an effect similar to swimming at the edge of a waterfall. This feature is often used with properties offering amazing views, where the pool water appears to drop off into the surrounding area. It looks easy to get swept over the side, however, the wall extends to just under the water level and prevents anyone from actually going over the edge.
Negative edge design – The water level is even with the pool edge and spills into a catch basin, which runs around the rim of the pool. Similar to the infinity-edge pool style, the exception is the water only spilling into the catch basin rather than a continuous flow of water. With no activity in the water, water appears motionless and well contained.
Knife-edge design – In this pool style, the water level is even with the pool edge and deck, with only a thin slot built along the pool top to catch water, which is pumped back into the swimming pool.
Wet deck pool design – The water, pool edge, and deck surface are at the same level, and water drains back to the pool when splashed over. Gravity brings the water back to the pool rather than a catch and pump system.
Glass/Acrylic pool wall design – This design style is something akin to swimming in a human aquarium. One or more of the pool walls is made of thick glass or acrylic so that swimmers can view the outside world, and the outside world can view the swimmers. This option is one of the more expensive features build options, and prices can range from $16,000 for a 5ft x 3ft glass window to over $100,000 for an entire glass poolside wall.
