10: lifting someone up out of excitement

The first time it happened was during couples game night – a monthly enforced night of relaxation. Though Percy wasn't entirely sure how well 'enforced' and 'relaxation' went together, but that was Annabeth; everything was planned through, including relaxation. So once a month, the couples would gather at the praetors' house and play games.

Jason and Reyna were usually the frightening power couple that needed to be beat somehow. And Juniper and Grover had their whole own language too, they were impossible to beat at charades.

Tonight though – tonight Nico and Percy wiped the floor with their friends. It was their first-ever victory as a couple. They rarely lost to come in last place, but so far the closest they had come to winning had been second place. But that night, playing Mythomagic, they won.

“Ye—es! I knew you would get the hang of this!” Nico sounded so excited.

And the next moment, Percy found himself wrapped up in his boyfriend and... picked off the ground. At first he was still to euphoric from their victory to really notice, but then, as he was being whirled around, he noticed that his feet weren't touching the ground anymore. Percy blinked doe-eyed as he was being put down again, his hands slowly gliding off Nico's neck.

“Did you just... Did you just pick me up?” asked Percy startled.

“I. Uh. Huh. I guess I did?” confirmed Nico, looking as surprised.

“Don't look that surprised, you've been training hard!” called Jason out, sounding proud.

“Pe—ercy. Are you blushing? Are you blushing, Percy?” asked Grover teasingly, elbowing Percy. “Aw, don't tell me you feel swept off your feet by your Prince Charming.”

Percy glared at his best friend, his cheeks heating up a bit more. Okay so perhaps his boyfriend had filled out a lot over the past few years since the Giant War, he'd been training hard. But Percy hadn't figured that Nico would just be able to pick him up like that.

“What?” Nico whispered softly, teasingly, into his ear. “I gotta train if I want to carry you over the threshold when we get married, you know?”

Well, now Percy's face matched Rachel's hair, so he poked Nico's chest. Okay so perhaps they had been talking about maybe marriage and had kind of eyed rings, but it was all talk of the far-off potential future. Now this, this painted a more concrete picture. Percy let his hands slip from Nico's shoulders and over his arms, decidedly feeling his boyfriend's biceps.

“I think you'll have to train a little more if you wanna actually carry me,” teased Percy.

Nico huffed and leaned in to kiss his earlobe. “Challenge accepted, amore.”

👀 How did Meng Yao end up in Yunmeng Jiang?

Since this takes place in a modern world, Meng Shi once tried to take Jin Guangshan to court once she learned that he had no intention of actually taking care of Meng Yao as his son, but unfortunately Jin Guangshan’s lawyers were the best money could buy, and Meng Shi was forced to settle for a one time payment and a nondisclosure agreement

(Is that how law works? Let’s just pretend it is and that the preceding paragraph does not sound like utter gibberish)

Anyway, Meng Shi was terribly distraught, and poor young Meng Yao was heartbroken, but they returned back to their home in the Yunping District, which is close to Yunmeng

After a couple of years, Meng Shi began doing some deep research into cultivation sects and learned that the Yunmeng Jiang Sect was known for blurring the usual strict dividing line between cultivators and civilians, and that they often hosted a summer camp that taught child some basics of cultivation, to better defend themselves against low level demons

Of course, Meng Shi enrolled Meng Yao in the program, hoping that if he impressed his teachers enough, they would take him into the sect

It took a couple of summers of repeatedly enrolling Meng Yao (and the summer camp did not come cheap) but Meng Shi was determined and Meng Yao worked harder than he ever had in his entire short life, and eventually Jiang Fengmian did recognize Meng Yao’s potential, and offered Meng Yao the opportunity to become a disciple

As per the nondisclosure agreement, Meng Shi kept mum about his parentage, and advised Meng Yao to do the same, tho she still intends on him earning his father’s recognition some day

However, one day Madam Jin pays her best friend a visit, and recognizes Meng Yao, try as he might to stay out of her range of vision

What follows is a lot of drama, as Madam Yu is torn between her loyalty to Madam Jin and the fact that she has genuinely begun to care for Meng Yao, since he is the only person who seems to be able to predict Wei Wuxian’s behavior with any sort of consistency, sparing the family many moments of embarrassment. At last, Madam Yu decides that Meng Yao can stay, as long as he vows to Madam Jin that he will keep his parentage secret

Meng Yao isn’t happy about the idea, but at last he concedes, if only because he has no other choice, and he has made some actual friends within the Yunmeng Jiang Sect

Jiang Yanli has basically already adopted Meng Yao as her newest baby brother, anyway
