Drupal 7 - Module installs to local web server

Running D7 on a debian based LAMP stack, and when I tried using the web based module installation feature, I got a warning page that https was not being used and additional fields showed up asking for FTP credentials.  

'WTF?' was naturally my first response.  

Thanks to a great deal of 'googling' I finally found a simple solution that works.  So before you go through the hassle of installing and configuring VSFTPD for a local test server (which seems like a silly effort waster...correct me if I'm wrong)

just "own" (apache2 user) the drupal directory for your default site (.../sites/default) and the module directory (.../sites/all/modules).

I believe the default username for apache2 is www-data.

Go to the parent directory of each of these folders and enter the following command:

sudo chown www-data default

and

sudo chown www-data modules

I went back to the install module prompts in D7 admin, entered the URL of the module tar, and poof..magic.
