Prologue:

It doesn't matter if you don't like it, if you don't want any of this bullshit. I hate it, and so many others feel the same way. Trust me, when you're Cataloged, don't fight it. Show no signs of grief, and only look solemn at the very least. If not, if you choose to abandon this lifestyle, and say the two most powerful and dangerous words humankind has created, everything will be remembered. Not just your own memories, but all of time and history as a whole will be shoved inside your head, only for you to be exiled to Nowhere.

Do not say it. You must accept. When the time comes and you are given this decision, do not hesitate even for a moment. If you falter, if your mind even begins to wander off and those words, the most horrifying and sickeningly powerful words, reach the tip of your tongue, it will all be over. Everything that you thought was right before, is now wrong.

I spoke those words. My stupid, headstrong self paused to think, and before I even knew it, the strength of my ignorance vanished.

Even though my own Catalog day happened oh so long ago, I can still feel the chill of the silence in the Amphitheater, and the burn on my tongue as the words I had spoken rang, as clear and pristine as a heart-wrenching melody: "I deny."
