Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

For the Palestine mole rat, which lives almost entirely underground, finding other members of their species. Fortunately, this species has a special way of attracting potential mates: when the breeding season starts, males and females drum their heads against the roof of their tunnels. This sends vibrations through the ground that lets other mole rats know exactly where they are.

It’s moleposting time let’s GOOO

I just crammed mole reaserch so let’s all learn about moles, sit down everyone class begins now.

There are two types of “moles” in the world—true moles, or talpidae, and burrowing mammals that have incredibly similar physical characteristics to true moles (due to convergent evolution) but are not actually related to them. We’ll talk about these guys later.

Talpidae, true moles, are small insectivores that live most of their lives underground. They have poor eyesight but have a very strong sense of touch and hearing so that they can detect and manœuvre in their environment. Their hands are big and round with an extra thumb for optimal digging and are incredibly sensitive to touch.

These little guys are also very sensitive to sunlight despite having small eyes and poor vision, so they have a pretty extreme stress response to being above ground for too long. Once their heads are back underground , they calm down and start digging. They are very fast diggers.

Moles are very solitary and shy creatures. They tend to avoid eachother even if their territories overlap.

Other burrowing mammals that are very similar to moles but are not in the same classification are golden moles and marsupial moles. They can be distinguished by their shovel like noses—as opposed to the trunk-like nose of a true mole—and longer, slimmer paws.
