Elliot is going to a new school, and he is mad because he thinks that coming in late September is almost the last day of school. Also to make matters worse he had a field trip on his first day. On his way to school he meets Uchenna, and she is very adventurous. When they are on the field trip they meet the mysterious Professor Fauna. He takes the class deep into the Pine Barrens, where Elliot and Uchenna find a jersey devil. At first they leave it where they found it, but when they get back on the bus the jersey devil follows them and flies through an open window. Luckily no one saw it because it turned invisible when it went through the window. So then Elliot and Uchenna put the jersey devil in Uchenna's backpack and brought it back to school with them. Then on their walk home they open the backpack and the jersey devil jumps out and runs away. They look for it everywhere, but finding a mythical creature that can turn invisible can be hard. Fortunately, they see Professor Fauna and ask him to help because he seemed right for the job. If they don't find the jersey devil it will wreak havoc among the town.

I rated this book a four because I thought it had lots of creativity put into it. I would almost think that it was written by a kid rather then an adult. Though I did have some logic problems with it. Like when they put the jersey devil in Uchenna's backpack wouldn't it suffocate? Still I thought it was a great book. I liked how the author made the characters. I also like the jersey devil and how it likes almond bars for some reason. So if you are 11 and under I would read this book.

Danny Cheng has just gotten into the Rhode Island School of Design [RISD], but he is not sure that he is going to be able to draw when he gets there, because he has been having a dry patch on his creative drawing for a while. Also on top of that his dad loses his job and he has to move away from his best friend, and he was trying to fix a friendship with another friend he has known since kindergarten. He thinks his dads losing his job isn't just about doing a silly experiment. Danny thinks that because he found a mysterious file in his hall closet about a wealthy Silicon Valley family named the Ballards. So what happens with the Ballards? Does he ever see his best friend again? Does his dry spell ever go away?

I rated the book a three because I thought it was really boring and sad. I don't want to read a book that makes me sad. Also it had too many flash backs. I would always get really confused about if it was the present or the past. Also some parts of the book just felt kind of awkward to read. Some of the dialogue was off too, though I liked how the author shaped each character’s personality. That is why I rated the book 3 stars.
