Shiny Happy Trailer

Most people’s adolescent years are filled with angst and uncertainty. But Molly Sharp had a crystal clear dream: to become a jeweler. Her self-proclaimed obsession with jewelry started early and has finally been realized: She and her husband recently completed the renovation of a 1966 Airstream trailer that she dubs a “traveling jewelry store.” It marks the opening of The Silver Soul, a “fun, funky, little place” that’s at once a workshop, a retail space, and a shiny start to the couple’s bright future.

Besides the practical reason of being able to travel with her musician husband on gigs, the trailer enables Molly to bring her art to more people. She has created “this little world” where customers can have a truly unique experience and a truly unique piece. They can “pick out what they want, and I’ll hammer-set it while they’re here.” 

It seems Molly doesn’t like to be tied down, and her wanderlust shows up in her whimsical work. From her years learning metalsmithing in New Mexico, she brings an appreciation of “turquoise, Native American stuff, healing stones, and extremely colorful things.”

In Portland, she learned stonecutting and “ways to make unique organic stones that come straight out of the ground into really crazy settings.” 

Her latest collection represents her Texas heritage and incorporates lots of animals and stones and even – yep – a rattlesnake skin.

Molly sources her gems and vintage finds (which are also for sale inside the trailer) by scouring flea markets and estate sales, but she plans to excavate her own gems in the future. This girl is serious.

Her process starts with sketching but, Molly admits, “I’m not the best at drawing, so my sketches are usually hilarious compared to the finished piece.”

One look at those pieces will dispel any concerns about her creativity or skill level. If you need confirmation, just ask her husband about the time she finished his wedding ring three days before the ceremony.

For now, you can find The Silver Soul parked in their backyard, but look for it soon on the road. Maybe they’ll meet up with our food trucks.
