You know mommy jacking?

Well a really weird subset of that is if you push a human out of your genitals your chronic illnesses get dismissed by anyone else who has shoved a kid out of their nethers. Like I have Fibromyalgia and a symptom of that is chronic fatigue but if I mentioned being overly exhausted or in pain (the other main symptom) I'd be told in an ANGRY tone: "Well of course your tired all mothers are tired" and I'm like "???!!!" Because yes being a new parent is exhausting but I still have a chronic illness? It's only in the last couple of years that other parents have stopped dismissing my pain or fatigue as "just being a new parent" and people got so mad about it too. Like how dare I suggest I was tired for reasons other than being a parent It was so weird to me that they'd be so angry about it

That “mommyjacking” post I just reblogged got me to thinking about something.

There’s a huge expectation that women - if they choose parenthood - embrace motherhood completely and utterly. It feels like, once women become mothers, it become their first and sole identity in the eyes of society. And if they don’t make motherhood their sole identity, then they’re made to selfish or there’s an undertone of meanness.

While the women in the mommyjacking post were definitely extreme - and self-absorbed - examples, reading the comments reminds me of my early motherhood days. I shared a lot of photos and videos of my daughter, I made posts about her; I feel I had very little content that had to do with me, because I felt, if it didn’t have to do with my daughter, I would be judged for talking not talking about her on some absurd level.

I’ve grown and I’m re-discovering things about myself, now. But, back then, between societal expectations of being a new mother and emotional abuse... well, losing other parts of my identity and only being a mother was my existence. I felt very lonely and very unfulfilled. 

Admitting you’re lonely and unfulfilled as a mother is also a big “no-no” in old-school mother circles, I think.

Whenever I have my period, I imagine it as a middle finger to douche moms on Facebook who brag about making their own soap and momjacking every conversation. Like TAKE THAT KAREN! ANOTHER MONTH I MADE IT AVOIDING JOINING YOUR CULT!
