Monarchos, winner of the 2001 Kentucky Derby, passed away the morning of October 22 after displaying signs of internal discomfort Oct 21 and undergoing emergency surgery to repair a ruptured intestine. He had undergone colic surgery years prior. He was 18.

Bred in Kentucky by J.D. Squires, Monarchos was by Maria’s Mon and out of the Dixieland Band mare Regal Band. Monarchos was offered at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale in 1999, but did not sell until his juvenile season when consigned by Murray Smith to the Fasig-Tipton Florida February sale of 2-year-olds in training. He was purchased by John Oxley, at the advice of his traine John Ward Jr., who was taken with the impressive looking gray. His regular jockey was Jorge Chavez.

Monarchos ran twice as a juvenile, both times in a maiden race. He lost them both, but hitting the board in the second. He won his first start as a sophomore, a maiden race, and then followed his first victory with two more in an allowance race and the Gr.I Florida Derby. In his last start before the Kentucky Derby, Monarchos ran second to Congaree in the Gr.I Wood Memorial.

Monarchos held 10-1 odds on the morning line for the Kentucky Derby, and he started from the 16th post. Monarchos was bumped at the start of the Derby, but made steady progress on the outside. Chavez sent him to the lead a furlong from the finish, and Monarchos pulled clear to win by almost five lengths from Invisible Ink, with Congaree third and the favorite Point Given fifth.

Monarchos' winning time was 1:59.97 for 1¼ miles, second only to 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, who ran 1:59 2⁄5.

Monarchos ran sixth of eleven in the Preakness Stakes, won by Point Given. He ran third in the BElmont Stakes, also won by Point Given. After the race, it was discovered that Monarchos had sustained a hairline fracture to his right knee, which ruled him out for the rest of the season. Monarchos was set to return as a four year old in the Donn Handicap, but after a poor showing in a prep race and another injury, this time a tendon, he was retired in 2002.

Monarchos retired with a race record of 10:4-1-3 and earnings of $1,720,830. He first retired to Claiborne Farm with a stud fee of $25,000. His most successful foals are Informed Decision, a winner of the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint and a multiple graded stakes winner of $2.2 million, and Win Willy, winner of the Rebel Stakes and one-time Kentucky Derby contender, winner of over $1 million. His other notable progeny include Mr. Monarchos (JPN), Stormin Monarcho, Bingham, Estrela Monarchos (BRZ), Riley’s Monarch, Stones River, and Aces Star. Of 512 foals to date, Monarchos sired 349 runners.

At the time of his death, Monarchos was standing at Nuckols Farm, owned by Charles Nuckols III, and his 2016 fee was $2,000.
