Shimla: Thousands upon thousands of monkeys are terrorizing the historic Indian city Shimla. They have evaded sterilisations as well illegal poisonings. Most macaques fled India to seek food in the country during India's coronavirus shutdown. Many Monkey catcher try to catching them but fails.
Since restrictions have eased, they have returned as bullies to bully inhabitants and snatch groceries bags. Approximately 50 hungry monkeys prowl the Himalayan hills where once colonial British summer escapes in the Himalayan Hills.
Tourists are drawn to the city of 160,000 citizens for its sweltering summer heat. But, it has also been a great attraction for those who want to avoid India's extreme summer heat. The food waste they leave behind has been a magnet for hungry simians.
Nand Lal showed AFP the wounds sustained during an altercation this month with the animals. "I was walking along a group of monkeys and the dominant male suddenly attacked me, three others piled into," explained Nand Lal, 46. After the assault, he required multiple anti rabies injections.
"Fortunately, I could grab my stick and fight them all off. I had bruises all around my head, face, and neck. I was bleeding due to a bite on the back. Lal reported that he could still feel the "chattering," of his attackers and those two dozen monkeys that were watching him several days later.
Kuldeep Chand Sood is a retired judge from the High Court. He said that people feel scared and don’t know what else to do. Kuldeep Chand Sood pointed out a bite in his left leg that he received while sitting on the porch of his home. He told the story that a big monkey attacked him as he was looking through his book.
Many Sanjauli properties now have metal frames covering their windows and terraces in order to stop the intruders. The sterilisation of around 157,000 animals across Himachal Pradesh has been done in recent years. One expert stated that this was the "only" way to get the problem under control.
